Insurance

Question - over the years we have, probably like many, acquired lots of camping equipment, from a trailer to tent and accessories.

While such equipment is usually covered in some shape or form whilst at home, there is often limited cover (if at all) while away.

Most main Insurance companies seem to offer cover for Caravans, Trailer Tents and Tents.

Has anyone got any suggestions for companies that will insure for a tent, trailer (not trailer tent) and usual accessories? Perhaps a specialist broker?

Ideally looking for a policy that covers all tent, awning, trailer and accessories for a maximum monetary value.

Would be particularly keen to here good and bad experiences dealing with theft and how you got on? For example, if your empty trailer was stolen while camping, did the insurance policy cover you?

Thanks

You can get cover through the camping and caravanning club I believe. But you might want to check with your home insurer first as some do cover you whilst camping

Hi Holster.
Our Tent, Kit and Trailer are insured with "Shield Total Insurance" from memory this is who the C&CC use although I am not a member.

We have 2 Policies with Shield one for the Trailer and the other for the Tent and Kit.

To make it really worth while you really need to be over insured in respect of what you paid for your kit.

Like in my case Tent cost £700 retail at the time was £1600 also my Fridge which cost £150 with a retail at the time of £500 and the same with the Trailer £800 cost and £1200 retail at the time and so it goes on.

At least then in the event of total loss, the payout will be worth something, as these Policies are not Old for New, so the depreciation of your insured goods will be factored into any payout.

Even my most recent purchase an additional fridge was just £139 with the closest UK retail price being £300!.

Of course the higher cost you insure for dictates what the premium will be, only you can justify if it is worth the cost, when you consider the almost zero chance that you will ever need to make a claim.

But I guess it's more about peace of mind than actual reality.

We have insurance for the tent through camping and caravan club, and trailer insurance from stoneways. As someone else has just said, we couldn't find cover for the rest of the equipment that applied if the equipment was unattended.
This is our first year camping with all brand new stuff, so decided to insure the tent for the first couple of years and maybe when it's depreciated in value later on, probably won't bother.

So far as I'm aware only Shield offer comprehensive insurance when you are away from your tent, even when it's not 'locked in a secure location'.

Some of us retailers give out codes fro 10% off policies so it's worth checking info pages to see if you can save.

Avg price is around £30 for a tent set up costing up to £1,000 and £40 up to £2,000 I believe
