I am looking for a reliable bright camping lantern.
We are considering this one but there aren't many reviews.

http://www.gelert.com/products/rechargeable_remote_controlled_u_tube_lantern

I'm finding it a bit confusing as some manufacturers use lumens and others wattage so it's difficult to compare them.
I wondered if anyone had found a decent one. We want a good light that will light up the tent, like putting the light on at home, but without having to carry lots of batteries (hence rechargable).
Thanks

I had a fluorescent U Tube rechargeable lantern and it was great, really bright.

It packed in so I replaced it this year with a Vango LED lantern. This was a mistake, it is nowhere near as bright.

The lantern in your link should be ok but you can get U Tube lanterns for about half the price from Amazon.

I hate Tube lanterns, the light is stark and garish, and they seem to attract for more flying insects than any other light source, although I will agree most Tube lanterns will be far brighter than any LED Lantern.

The best LED lantern around is the Outwell 400LX at 400 lumens (4watt) it is about as good as it gets in the LED lantern department, using just 4 super bright Cree LED's.

The Outwell is available under different brands for a lot less money, I paid around £25 for each of my two.

Although the Outwell is a bright lantern, it is still only half as bright as a single mantle Gas lantern. one of the reasons why I got 2.

We mostly use EHU so the LED lanterns are mostly for back up, our main source of light is from a BulkHead lantern with polycarbonate lense, and well bright using a 105watt Halogen Bulb, which is as bright as a regular 150watt bulb, so close on 1800 lumens in new money.

Far to bright for most occasions, so it's controlled with an inline rotary dimmer and rocker switch, and gives a lovely almost yellow hue glow when dimmed.

The Nichia led or Cree led lanterns are very bright and use a lot less juice than the flourescent tube tanterns.

Maplin were doing the 300 lumen Nichia lantern the same as the Outwell branded one recently. Got mine for £14.99, Outwells RRP is £39.99.

Hi Francais

What are the other cheaper brand labels that the outwell is sold under? £25 is much better than £54.

Hi Inishcara.

Got our two Outwell 400LX Lanterns from GoOutdoors early last year, they price matched and knocked of a further 10% like they do, against "The Out Door Megastore" who I think had priced up the 400 at the 300 price wrongly, as they soon uped the price, no doubt due to GoOutdoors making a complaint I guess, as I posted the deal on here and a fair few members went for it I guess.

Anyway since then these 400 Lumen Lanterns have gone up in price, when I thought they may have come down.

The BaseCamp Katmando is the same model as the Outwell 400LX and could be had for under £35 some time back, but they seem also to have gone up.

Hi Griff.
That does seem good value, but at 64 Lumens, it still makes the 400 Lumens of the Outwell 400LX type lantern a no brainer.

Also I would say that re-chargeable lanterns can be a pain when the battery pack starts to fail, I much prefer the Outwell lantern that we run of re-chargeable "D" cells.
