hi all - just received my new 4.5m x 3.0 m DD tarp, cant wait to have a play with it on our trip next month at hendra holiday park. will I be better off getting some telescopic poles or just manage with the outwell door upright poles which I have three off. mucker has given me some usefull tips to attatch it to my Yosemite falls tent so any more tips would be appreciated thanks -shaun
Make do with the poles you have for now, and first chance you get, set it up, stand back and admire it.... then work out how you'd really like it, and get the extendable kingpoles!!
The basic ones at GO do me....
Mucker have you got any pics that you could put up as im after an extension for my nevada but would a tarp work out better and cheaper? Many thanks in advance if you could

Am I right in thinking that this tent has fibreglass poles? If so, concentrate on using poles (fixed height, or better still, the adjustable "King poles". Avoid putting weight on your tent poles, as the tarp guys will be tight enough to "squash" the natural arc of your tent!!
For the side door (Am I right in thinking you have a porch over this door?), a set up like mine should suffice....
If you dont have a porch, then ideally, your tarp would need to go over the tent (beyond the central ridge line) to keep the rain off. That's a lot of tarp area "being wasted".
For the front door (I don't use ours), something like this, perhaps?.... (With thanks to "Gumball")
I prefer the above to Jelboy's (No offence, Jellers! ) ....
.... as he is risking "squashing" the front pole. (Which is exactly what I did with a similar attempt, on the exact same tent/extension combo!) Possible damage, and certainly probable struggle with door zips. I wouldn't trust myself!!
I must confess, I get quite a thrill "living under a tarp", as opposed to the off the shelf canopy extensions, but I must stress, they (the tarps) are no easier to put up, and quite possibly not particularly cheaper either. The purpose made canopies also come with walls, of course, whereas I had to faff about putting up a bloody windbreak too, this weekend!
It just seems a little less "uniform", using a tarp, and I, for one, am a big fan!!

wow some great ideas for a tarp .im so excited think I will be ok as im a builder so can build owt- shaun
So, you've finished your front wall (at home) then, I take it?
After reading this thread, and not being prepared to spend £100 on an Outwell tarp - I ordered and am now the proud owner of a dd tarp (3x3).
Couple of questions though:
I'm hopefully going to buy some extendable poles tomorrow - however on unpacking the tarp there are no eyelets. How do others stop the poles going through the loops?
Any must know tips on putting up a tarp for the first time?
