ok quick question, long tent poles with flags or novelty things on top that people put at there tent sites, what on earth are they called

Most folk call em "whips"...they are more expensive purchased for the purpose to fly flags etc.  Like the earlier postee ( Francophile) Cheap fishing poles are better. They stand a hell of a tug, and you may need to pop into Wilkinsons or similar to get a ground spike to hold them up.
