Just returned from a Sunday morning swim and saw a car with 2 bicycles on the roof.
The driver obviously didn't know the height of his combination as he attempted to drive through a 2.10m height barrier to a car park, and must have been going at quite a speed due to the barrier being bent, the roof bars bent, one bicycle and carrier hanging off the roof and the other bent.
I have heard of a car park that stipulates the height of the barriers but due to the speed bump at the exit barrier it's actually shorter than stated height and has caused a few scrapes
"Luckily", at 1.805m high, I consider my car to be too high to add anything comfortably/without scratching etc.
We've got bags of room inside, so no need for a roof box, and we've just purchased a couple of bikes, but they'll be sat on the tow bar, so no "new" height for me to worry and/or forget about! Equally, I have a rear view camera that shows up in the central mirror when in reverse, so I won't be able to forget they have added to my length, (I always reverse into parking spaces, as a rule) even if they obscure my view (through the camera).
Waiting for the cycle carrier bits to add to my Thule Easy Base, so not had a trial run yet.
Stickers are fine if they are in yer face. If they are on the other side of the visor, just to remind you of the actual height, rather than to remind you that you have actually got something sat on your roof at the present time, then not much use!
I have a feeling this is exactly the sort of thing I would be "capable" of doing, in all honesty, so a case of "There but for the grace....." I reckon.
Just hope that no one was hurt... physically, that is!!
Easily done! We forgot about our box on the way in to a beach car park on the Isle of Wight last year. However, because of the speed we entered, the suspension dropped sufficiently not to cause too much of an issue. The bigger problem was hubbie's determination that if we got in we could get out! What he didn't factor was that by going so much slower on the exit the suspension didn't 'give'. Watching (I was trying to let him know that he really didn't have the clearance to make it) the box crack and split wasn't pleasant! This year we've patched up the box with duck tape but I'm just waiting for it to spill it's contents one day...
Agree that they probably forgot about the bikes and we are all capable of forgetting - just some more than others
