I've got bottles that still have a liquidy sound when swirled (907s). When do you swap yours? When they run out completely?------------- 2014

If you've more than one part empty cylinder, take both, use the one with least in (check weights) and exchange it when empty.
If you only have one (and no back-up stove) it will probably run out when you're sited miles from a supplier!

I exchange when totally empty but I have two bottles. I'd hate to give a bottle back with some inside.

I've been expecting our 907 to run out on each of our last two trips, and have just returned with it still not having done so!! (I've been taking a third full calor lite as back up!
Next trip is France, so I'll start with the 907 there, but have the Calor lite as back up. As soon as my 907 is empty, I'll switch to the calor, and get a refill for the 907, which I'm led to believe is easily sourced over there. I'll continue with my calor, which may just run out over there, but I'll need to bring that back empty, and refill over here.
That should then (after I return from France) leave me with one almost full 907, ready for next spring, and a full calor lite, in readiness for this coming winter.
I only take one bottle if I am absolutely certain it won't run out!!
Even if you know the campsite you are heading to does refills, it's still a pain if it goes halfway through cooking a meal!

We always carry two 907's, so never run out of Gas.
Most campsites and supermarkets in France do refills for 907, 904 and 901 cylinders.
In fact as we use EHU as much as possible, our current 907 has lasted for 7 weeks campings in the South of France during July.
And it has still got plenty left.

I hate to swap when it's still got gas in too. I don't often take a spare, but we always camp with friends anyway so have their trailer tent stove as backup.
I've been taking my halogen oven for the last year which massively extends the life of our gas bottles - daily breakfasts for 10 or 12 sapped it no end!!------------- 2014

We only carry one and excahnge it when empty, which is by nature always going to be half way through something, we always have a trangia and mini burner that uses the same gas as our lamp, so not completely stuck when it goes

I carry two, unless it's only for a weekend and it's a new bottle. I exchange when empty. Gas is expensive enough without throwing some of it away!

You could do it by weight using luggage scales as they can be kept with your camping gear as they take up virtually no space..
An empty 907 bottle weighs roughly 3.700kg, which is usually stamped on the side of the bottle.
A full 907 bottle weighs roughly 6.420kg.
Therefore, 2.720kg, (6lb), is the weight of the gas.
If you wiegh it and the scales say 5.06kg then it is roughly half full.
Hope it helps.
