We bought our 907 gas bottle a few years ago and I seem to remember that if we were to return it there's some sort of deposit to receive. Is this still the case or has this ever been the case?
I think it used to be the case, and certainly I remember signing a rental agreement for a cylinder, way back when. Haven't tried it though. We've given away, or sold on, various empty/partially full cylinders, and these days have only ever swapped an empty 907 for a full one.
As empties have an exchange value, it follows that they have a cash value too, in a private sale, but I don't know, in all honesty, whether a shop would just give you something back just for the empty one where you're not wanting a full one.
I suppose I'm taking 2 paragraphs to say "I don't know"

My advice is worth no more than the price paid for it
Yes, you usually get it back from whoever sold you it, on proof of purchase. (Doesn't have to be a receipt, a cheque stub or credit card statement is usually sufficient.) In practice though this usually means you lost the PofP decades ago and the best option is to put it on the local free ads for £5 or £10. If you had a good and (for them) profitable relationship with your local camping store though it never hurts to ask, you might get a credit note.
So did I theres a new bottle price and an exchange price usually. I have a bottle that has been exchanged since an original purchase about 40 years ago.
Campingaz you just buy, no rental etc. Calor you pay a rental and if you keep the agreement you get a % back over the first few years with a sliding scale if you have the original agreement.
