We've got a proper flushing portaloo now, but I still have one of the old fashioned type in the shed - it's like a bucket with a lid, except that you remove the sealed lid and slot a toilet seat with lift up lid onto it, then pour the chemicals and some water into the bottom of it. I too used to carry a calor bottle in this old loo. Must admit that it was a bit more noisy when in use than the modern flush ones though
been camping for 20 years and have always used the old bucket and laughed about it. better than going out in the rain. the kids new where it was and didnt need to wake us ok you may have to wash the floor in the morning but that is great hardship lol .caravaning now but only use the porta loo for night time.dont use money or space when you dont have too xx
thanks sweetie :O) did anyone mention that these buckets can hold the gas bottle aswell,we used to but ours in when we had the tent,so space saving as well as a night time buddy :O)
Naomi :O)

Once again, many thanks for all the replies - love the Action Man bucket by the way, Cas!!
Having had a long hard think, we have decided to get the Porta Potti from our local cmping shop - also need to get EHU so may as well buy both at the same time!!
If it wasn't for the kids I probably would have made do with a bucket but think we need something a bit more stable for the children to use - esecially our 3 year old son (plus OH after a few too many!!) as I know it would be Muggins here that would be left with the job of cleaning up any accidents!
Thanks again - knew I could rely on you all for honest opinions
Val - I find the training pants brilliant at night - although Alice is now dry she still wears them if she sleeps in my bed - cos you can guarantee that's the time she'll have an accident. I also want to be 100% certain that there'll be no wet sleeping bags. I can get a couple of nights out of the one pair - and they are more "grown up" than nappies. We call them "big girl pants".
We found the portapotti very useful as Alice refused point blank to use a potty - even at two in the morning. She would only use a proper toilet - and she saw the portapotti as a proper toilet. First season out - I got fed up with the two in the morning toilet trips so I invested in a portapotti. Ok I still have to get up with her, but at least the portapotti is either in the tent, or the toilet tent next to the main tent.

Training pants would be fine by me and we have tried them....except Little Miss discovered that she could take them off and have a pee in her waste-paper bin then put the training pants in on top, go back to bed and wet the bed later......
So she still wears ordinary nappies at night plus a popper vest holding them on. She can take this combination off herself, but seems to belive that anything resembling pants needs to be removed for a pee while nappies are OK to pee into.
Children are weird at times, no? At least the waste-paper basket doesn`t leak, and it`s good training for using a bucket-n-lid!
Well I've done the deed!! Went and bought a Porta Potti from our local camping shop this morning - £63 including all the chemicals and 6 toilet rolls as well.
You will NOT regret it! What could be cosier than your own loo???
