After a few years of camping in the UK we have decided to travel further afield this year and will be going to france.
As the site we will be staying at does not permit charcoal we have decided to by a small Weber Q series gas BBQ. It runs off small canisters which look to be expensive and probably don't last too long.
Given that we have thought about getting an adapter to run it from a separate gas bottle.
Now my knowledge on these bottles is zilch and was wondering if any kind person could give me some info on the type of bottle i should buy and if i will be able to refill it ok in france?
Someone is selling a blue camping gaz canister in my local area for £6 with a regulator which sounds a good buy as i know i need a bottle to swap for a full one.
Campingaz is freely available in France almost like Calor in England. Campingaz however is quite expensive when compared with Calor. I would imagine just taking a 4.5kg it and or 3.9kg propane would really last a good few weeks of bbq

Also I'm not familiar with the bbq you mentioned but if you can run out from Campingaz with an adapter then I'd imagine Calor would also work with the correct regulator. Calor is cheaper but isn't available in France. Campingaz is more expensive but is freely available so if money isn't a concern then Campingaz is a good option but you could easily take enough gas with you to last a few weeks of BBQ s

As pointed out, good price for Campingaz bottle & regulator. You will have to hope it is the largest 907 bottle & that if regulator is screwed into it the little screw in handle that replaces regulator when you exchange bottle is present otherwise some suppliers will charge you extra at exchange, but no worries because even without handle price is ok.
Certainly you can use a Calor bottle with correct regulator but as you are going to France, I'd go for the Campingaz bottle.

It seems that the best option for us might be to use Patio Gas bottles as they look quite compact and i think that 5KG should be fine for a 2 week trip.
Does anyone know if Patio Gas is propane or butane or have any thoughts on whether this would not be a great choice?

It makes no difference whether you use butane or propane, the appliance will work equally well on either & Patio gas will be ok. Correct regulator which is 27mmclip 37mb for Calor Patio gas.
Patio gas is a fine choice, pure propane and the bottles even have a level indicator to tell you how much gas is left. I don't actually have a patio gas cylinder but I'm getting one for my new bbq that I'm going to buy. I have a 47kg propane I need to get rid of so I'll exchange that.

Personally speaking I can't see the point of buying patio gas. It's still propane but you pays more for it than a std red bottle.
It is possible to convert a weber q to run off bigger bottles I've done it. Just bear in mind the the nut you need to undo to replace the tube is a LH thread and tight.
I've just been through exactly the same thing - having bought a number of solid fuel BBQ's for doing that little bit more than just grill, from Cobb through to Volcano Grill. None of them cut the mustard, so I have moved to gas and have just bought a Weber Q120. Sliced bread - very very close. At home I run it on Patio Gas, down the beach on portable canisters and when camping in France later this year it will be Camping Gaz. I will just change the regulator on the longer hose for that.
Looks good svogel75. Meat thermometer vital piece of equipment takes all the guess work out of knowing when it is cooked. What is the tray under the meat and where can it get one?
The roasting rack is a defo. The tray though - I thought it would be one permanent reusable one but its a pack of 4. Once these have been used up I'll either use tin foil, doubled up or see if I can find some non Weber trays. Then put holes in it making sure they are not over the gas ring.
Now need to think what to cook/experiment next weekend...
Svogel75. Thanks for the info. I thought the trays were permanent so I will stick to double foil. My roasting rack came from pound land if I remember correctly.
Top tip
If you use foil drip trays. Stick a glass of water in them. Makes them easier to clean and stops them blowing away.
