Hi everyone. Today whilst heading north up the M18 towards Thorne going to work :( I saw what I thought was a tent hanging out of the back of a car come past, bit shocked at first then I realised it was sitting on a platform. Does anyone have one of these devices, and would you recommend it?. I am looking at buying a new tent this week (Filey 5 air) which comes in a large pack size, would the rack be suitable? Sorry for the rambling, but I've been trying to go camping without a trailer and this may help
regards, SJ
Still need a tow bar to be fitted in order to use one.
I bought one and sold it after the first practice load and realised I was over-loading the car, and bought a trailer instead.
The lady who bought it did not have much luggage space in her people carrier as it was mostly taken up by people, so it worked for her.

Yes I have one and a very handy bit of kit it is.
I have used it a couple of times for camping but in the end we had too much stuff even for that so we got a trailer, I still have it and wouldn't part with it although you have to be careful not to over load it I find it very handy for taking stuff to the tip and that sort of thing.
It only takes a minute or two to put on quicker than getting the trailer out, I used it in conjunction with one of those garden box things, not water tight but did the job I just held on with a couple of rachet straps.
Just two things to consider first it will prevent you opening the rear door if you have a hatchback like me and second with mine at least the thing got cover with exhaust soot until I put a deflector on the exhaust.
And of course you are not speed limited like you are with a trailer.
Not quite the same thing, but similar, I have a Thule 902 EuroClassic, which is a towball mounted bike carrier.
Back in 2008 I discovered that you could get a Thule 900 BackUp Box that would clip onto the bike carrier, as it provided a platform for the Box.
At around 400lt the BackUp Box was a good size, so in 2009 we loaded up and set of to France for 3 weeks, although I had done many test runs with the loaded box attached to the car, this was the first and last journey with the car fully loaded using the BackUp Box.
What happend was the car felt very odd to handle with the steering becoming light as a feather, even though I had checked that I was not over the 75kg max towball ( nose weight) for the VW Golf which I was using.
The BackUp Box is a great bit of kit, it was just not suited to my car so I sold the BackUp Box to someone on here who had a more suitable vehicle, in fact they even had a EasyBase towball mounted rack already fitted to there people carrier.
And as everyone one else has has commented, I also went out and bought a new Trailer after the experience.
I still have the Thule 902 EuroClassic Bike carrier which must be almost 10 years old now, and that still gets used on a regular basis.
Hi everyone, I already have a trailer, but its a pain to get in and out of storage. I didn't realise you couldn't get the boot lid open. I have a Seat Ibiza Estate which the dogs (2 x collies ) travel in the boot. I was hoping with the rack and roof box I would have enough space, but because of the boot door issue, the rack is out. Thanks for the replies and advice. Suppose I could leave the wife at home and use the front seat :0

Hi SJ.
I did not realise that the EasyBase prevented the tailgate from opening, using the Thule 902 EuroClassic as a base does allow the tailgate to open, which is handy when we are using as a bike carrier.
Have you looked at the Westfalia version, very similiar to the EuroClassic and that has a specific box which can attach, maybe that models allows the tailgate to open.
When I say it prevents you opening the tailgate I meant that if the upright part of the easybase is in place and or the thing is loaded up high enough to get in the way.
The upright is removable and if you want you can use the easybase without it as long as stuff is strapped on ok, to lower the upright only takes a minute or two as there are just two knobs to loosen off and it folds down or can be removed completely.
I hope this clears up any confusion I may have created.
I have the Easy base, with the waterproof easy bag (soft box) and the 2 bike carrier.
I'll be selling all any time soon! :-)
The base can carry 45kg.
The easy bag holds 315 litres.
The bag and bike holders cannot be used together... one or the other.
You can add a further single bike carrier to the base, to carry a total of three... total weight permitting, of course.
Yes, when loaded, either with bikes or the bag, you won't be able to get the dogs in and out, unless they are miniature poodles!
It's brilliant for it's purpose, but it has limits, and needs to be unloaded before you can get gear from the boot.
Easybase with 2 bike holder...
Easybase with Easybag...
Reasons for selling (when I get around to it) are that I don't need the bag any more, since replacing the astravan with the mpv, and I now have a Thule bike carrier that tips whilst still loaded, to allow full access to the boot.
Im not sure what to do now. I have looked at other makes and systems and the thought of not being able to get the boot open in an emergency, (accident or fire) worries me alot. I think for now I will continue with dragging the trailer up the alleyway and across the front of the houses. Thanks for all the info and opinions
