I've just bought a suitcase stove mainly for keeping in the back of the car for making a cuppa while we are out and out. Do I need to take out the gas canister and put the lid back on after every use, or can I just leave the canister in the stove and pack it away?

We do the same as you and have been keeping one in the car for years now. We keep everything in a big plastic box ready for use and all we do is to just release the gas canister and leave it in place then turn the grid upside down and wack a large elastic band round the lot and never have any problems.

The gas canister needs to be stored upright so if you leave it in the stove, make sure it is stood up and secure so that it can't fall over.

The gas canister is self sealing once the lever is released so no problem whether you leave it in the stove or not. The little plastic cap on the top wouldn't make any difference if the canister was leaking. Just make sure the lever mechanism is released. I have had the same canister in my stove for at least two years and it works fine (I don't do a lot of cooking on gas )

Personally, when travelling,I don't like leaving the canisters "in situ" in the stove, even with the lever disengaged.

(..Just consider the amount of shaking and vibrations that may cause the "pin" to chatter against the valve assemble, possibly causing damage to both ..)

What I have done in the past is to reverse the canister in the stove chamber(and replace the plastic protective cap).That way it's still within the stove, for easy storage but the "pin" is protected.
