Use a claw hammer to pull them out (or a small crow bar, but a hammer with a wide claw should do it).
When I first started (only last year) I used the pegs that came with the tent without too many issues. The odd bent peg, but not too bad.
This year we bought the extension that goes with our tent. This came with slightly thinner pegs than the ones that came with the tent. One trip to a new camp site with stoney ground and half of the extension pegs and a quater of the main tent pegs bent beyond meaningful repair.
After this trip I bought three boxes of rock pegs to replace the wire ones. The are so much easier to bang in and, using a claw hammer, a lot less effort to pull out again. So far I have only managed to bend one of these, and that was trying to get it out of the ground before I started using a claw hammer.
I have also tried some bright yellow plastic ones, but after having some of these shatter (being hit with a wooden mallet) I have given up on these too.
I don't keep pegs (or guys) with any of my tents / awnings / windbreaks now. I have a box full of mostly rock pegs with a few others for specific jobs (wire pegs for pegging out the footprint, etc). The box also holds guys, a rubber mallet, a wooden mallet and a claw hammer as well as some misc. repair tools; gaffa tape, patches, penknife etc.
I haven't tried the rock pegs on loose, sandy soil though. This might be where the wider plastic pegs work better.
