Hi all, any advice gratefully received!

We bought one of the EHU leads with 3 sockets a couple of years ago and it was great for the first trips, in the UK - both wet and very cold. Last summer in France it didn't work and we assumed it was because the system was different so we borrowed a lead from the site. Last week we tried it on a local campsite and it isn't working at all. Can they be fixed or is it a case of throwing it away and getting a new one?

I'm tempted by the single socket cables as the ones we've borrowed on campsites have seemed more reliable. Any thoughts on that? We're going to Les Embruns at Le Pouldu in a couple of weeks and I'm not sure if we'd be able to borrow one there if we can't sort it in time.

Thank you in advance!

Claire

We've tried it at home and on a campsite and it's definitely not working :( It hasn't been used much though, so I'm wondering if it's possible to get them fixed or if it needs replacing?

It's reversed polarity that originally fried the cable.

see here

Not sure if it can be fixed. If it has a trip on it, could be that that needs resetting.

Are you sure that is correct?..I'm no electrician but of all of the lengthy and in depth discussions I've come across on "reversed polarity", none have ever flagged up that it will "fry" your cables?
Most seem to say  that most (not all)appliances will still function normally and that it only really becomes a safety issue if a fault arises and/or folk starting messing with their appliances with them plugged in(with things being live ,that shouldn't be..).

If "reversed polarity" could "fry" hook-up cables(and/or their inner working)then surely, rather than relying on £2.99 plug-in testers and homemade leads, some sort of mandatory "auto-polarity correction"  switches/mechanisms would be required by law? ..

I would've thought it's far more likely to be an inner trip or fuses of sorts...or iffy connection...

Reverse polarity will not "fry" a cable!
I find it amazing that anyone could suggest such a thing, they obviously haven't thought it out,if reverse polarity fried cables half of the mainland EU campers would have suffered the same thing.
The only situation that will "fry" a cable is if you overload it and your MCB or fuse doesn't operate.

Unless you are competent enough to take the casing apart and look for broken or loose connections in both the unit and the plugs, for the sake of £30 I would buy a new one.

I stand corrected! sorry it was just an unfortunate turn of phrase I was using there. Perhaps I should have said Bu**ered up your cable, as I have heard that this sometimes happens.

How would reverse polarity affect a cable? Shheeez

You will have to open the ehu up and systematically go through each component. There is a loose or broken connection or the circuit breaker is damaged.

Find a local electrician to have a look at it for you, might just be loose wire somewhere.

Mine has a RCD switch in the section at the top, it trips if something goes wrong and has to be reset. Tried that?
