We are going to yorkshire coast on 1st Oct but only have 1 season bags. We are going to put mummies inside the square ones for the kids(Good idea or bad?)so now we need two bags for us.Do we need 1/2 season or three season bags.We have wall to wall carpet,Sim on that and thick fleece on that. I read on hear that one underneath is worth two on top. Cash is getting a bit short now any advice please.I know we should have thought of this last year but it was only meant to be a one off adventure and now its an obsession, So much so,That we've spent more money on kit lately than the house.Have tent will camp eh.

Not being funny, but priorities should be tent, then sleeping kit!
October can get cold of a night, and even with a fan heater going, it can often be "nippy" at the very least.
If you can run to it, try and get hold of a good quality fleece lined fisherman's sleeping bag.
As well as not being the cheapest, they are also thick and heavy, so unfortunately, that means big pack size. But if you can afford the money, and spare the room in the car, I can guarantee you will be delighted with the actual bag in use.
We have one of These apeice, and I assure you, despite having top class SIM's, polycotton tents and tarps, camp beds, and even a massive 7 seater car, pound for pound, these bags are the best bit of kit we have.
Too much for balmy summer nights, of course, but for cold Spring and Autumn nights, I sleep in shorts and short sleeve footy shirt, no socks. For full on winter, including snow, I upgrade to just one full layer... thermal bottoms and long sleeve top, thin socks, and a balaclava... and no, we don't have the heater on through the night!
At the very least, please get down to GO, and check them out.
As a warning though, they are top right...
Like I say, not small, but totally worth it, imo.
EDIT:
Just noticed that bit of white stuff on the drive! The photo's dated 1st April 2013, (Easter?) so that must be the time our Shrewsbury trip was cancelled due to the site being snowbound and pipes frozen, so we headed east to Yorkshire, Not a lot of difference between October, and April weather-wise, I'd say!
2 season bags are Spring and Summer.
3 season bags are Spring, Summer, and Autumn.
4 season bags are Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter.
I would suggest at this time of year and certainly in October, 3 season bags would be appropriate. Any later than that and you may need a 4 season bag. You could take duvets or blankets of course as a last resort.
You will be nice and toasty with under floor heating and a lot less space to pack...Just my thoughts as I do this and find it hard to get out of bed as so warm and comfy!!!
Hi Mucker1884,Ive seen those fishermans bags and your right ,but out of our price range and to bulky.About that footprint you mentioned on last post.you did right there cause you would of lost the seams also. Thanks Bob.
.now then Sknarf,What would be the difference between the campa lec blanket and the one we have but never use at home ? Had one as a kid and was told never to leave it on overnight. No one has mentioned the kids so you agree they will be ok in double bags then. The more I think of it the less I am looking forward to this trip.

The difference is the ones for home use run off the mains circuit. the Kampa ones are a 12v product with a normal plug so safer when camping and they are machine washable too. They also have temp settings so so you can adjust the amount of heat.
I put the blanket under my 10cm SIM so its not in direct contact and sends a gentle heat through the bed and not an inferno so you wont over heat! and just keeps the cold off so nice and snug!I just use a double sleeping bag and thats enough for a good nights sleep!
Hope this helps and dont worry about the trip it will be fine no matter what route you take!!

You can cut that crap out!!
Seriously, if and when you find your own suitable solution to combat the cold, be it sat around in the evening or sleeping through the night, I'm tempted to say camping from Oct to April is at the very least, as enjoyable as the "more popular months".
Fresh air, in the truer sense. Crisp, healthy mornings. More often than not, a camping field all to yourselves... and the amenities, of course.
Do your research, and you could well end up at a camp site with heated loo/shower blocks... maybe even underfloor heating!!
There's even the added bonus of that "sense of achievement"... or at least, there was for us!
Go for it... it's bloody fantastic!
We use fleece balnkets inside our sleepng bags.Iv folded one in half and sewed across the bottom and about 12 inches up, just to stop feet poking out. Some on here have also put zips in.
In mine i have used two fleece blankets , we have a double sleeping bag.If iv been really cold iv put another blankets on top of fleece blankets.Get your PJ's on well before you turn in so body heat can warm them up.
