We would like to put an alarm on our caravan for use when we are touring and away from the caravan sight seeing. We have no idea what to buy so would be grateful for any help please.
If it's just a deterrent you want there are various battery operated keypad PIR devices available for under £20.
If that's what you are after come back and I'll provide a link. But Maplins, CPC etc stock that sort of thing. For more sophisticated stuff put Keen Electronics into your chosen search engine.
Oxter, we need something we can click ( a bit like a car key fob)and it will alarm the van when we are leaving our campsite to visit places when we are away touring. I am not very technical but am concerned to make sure it is not something that automatically activates when someone is near to the van and therefore becomes a nuisance to fellow caravanners and campers. We just would like something that activates when someone actually tries to break into the van. I am hoping we can get something that will sit on the outside of the caravan door ? Hope this makes sense, Many thanks.

Mine is a pretty simple 4 digit code PIR type alarm. You press one digit to arm it on departure - ( about 30 secs later it is live)
On return, when you enter it picks up your movement and beeps once then you have a few seconds to enter the 4 digit code before an earth shattering alarm sounds. It certainly won't activate due to outside activity unless you leave windows wide open.
If someone forces a window or door and comes in it will activate but won't stop the act of forcing the entry point. I doubt if any alarms do that. It simply screws to the wall at an appropriate place. A determined thief - if he recognised it as a self contained battery job could wrench it from the wall and remove the batteries, but most thieves would run away as soon as the shrieking thing goes off.
There are a few cheap fob operated ones here
We were recently on a Caravan Club site surrounded by security fencing, and our neighbours kept going in and out of their van all evening, putting on the alarm each time. The regular pipping did get to me, I admit. In all my 100+ whatever sites in the MH (and many more in a tent), I've never once seen doubtful characters loitering around an empty caravan (in the UK) as the on-site neighbourhood watch always seems to kick in, or the owner's house overlooks the site. I'd say a good set of window and door locks would be enough, an alarm won't stop a smash & grab. Well, it doesn't with a car (been there...) and OH's flat was broken into and cleared out despite a battery operated piercingly loud alarm on the door. But if you're wild camping, or alone on a CS or CL, I guess an alarm would give peace of mind, so you can relax and enjoy your holiday. Most folk seem more worried about the caravan itself being towed away.

I agree entirely, however the original post asked about alarms and in my opinion a cheap £10 ish one is all that most people might need. We seldom set ours but while in storage behind our house we can sleep easily knowing it is alarmed. Also sometimes use it in supermarket car parks etc.
If a deterrent to stealing the whole outfit is needed, the keen alarm operates when one of the corner steadies is raised. I have 2 caravans - 1 for France and 1 for uk and £20 ish is not a big outlay for 2 alarms. I have an alarm in the Summer house as well :0)
But this is well known to be the most helpful friendly place in the universe. We all benefit from the experience of out fellow campers / caravanners etc. and it is always even more of a pleasure when someone says thank you.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
