Does anyone know if there is a way to bring an old leisure battery back to life after having been flat for a few months?

Not worth the effort. There are all sorts of old wives tale remedies, tablets that are supposed to revive the cells but the cost of them and their lack of effective results, you may as well just buy a new one.

If money is tight then get a cheap car battery instead of a proper leisure one. It wont be designed for the type of use but it should last 3 - 5 years quite easily as long as you dont let it go flat again.

Give it a top up charge once a month. I leave mine on charge for 24 hours to several days each month.

I noticed recently that its 9 years old. Maybe time for a new one.

There is a possibility that you may be able to get the leisure battery kick started with the right sort of charger but the life of the battery will definitely be compromised for allowing it to decrease to a flat state. Over time the plates become sulphated which when they crumble they form a powder at the bottom so when they meet the internal lead plates then short circuit thus the reason for not holding a charge. The best policy would be to buy a new battery but to obtain a longer life you need to keep it charged on a regular basis as Grampian91 said. The correct charger to use is a smart charger which charges in 4 stages so it monitors each stage of charge but regulates it so it doesn't allow it to reach the gassing stage (over-heating).

Thanks for confirming what I suspected already. I was in my local dealership today (Michael Jordan), and they have numax leisure batteries for £89. I'll buy a charger as well.

We just plug into the socket by the front door - got a cable, put the EHU van fitting at one end and a 3 pin plug at the other - and charge up regularly during winter when it's most likely to lose charge. The cable goes through the storm door letter box, so we can shut the front door at night. (Clearly, that only works if your van is outside the house.)

I tried everything from pulse chargers to brutalistic 200a charging current from a mechanics charger /starter unit....

There is only one way that works and that is to cut the top off the battery, lift out the plates and physically clean them and put it back together sealing it up with a suitable sealer/hot melt glue or whatever.
I just bought an 85ah Leisure battery from Tayna batteries for about £48 inc next day delivery, it's not worth messing around.
