I'm sure there are more practical lights on the market, but nothing so beautiful. I'd be interested to know how it compares with other pressurised fuel lamps - the Coleman Northstar, for example.
I've owned the two lamps for over twenty odd years. Originally purchased for beach fishing, then when I went back to camping after a few years gap they were the first thing to be packed.
Bought a cooking adaptor on E Bay, new, for around five pounds. Used three or four times with no problems, except for keeping the lamp with adaptor and pan stable.
Fellow camper saw my set up and offered me a price for the adaptor which I could not refuse. I do see them from time to time.
Lamps now used with my ex army 9 x 9 and 12 x 12, extremely good source of light, also plenty of heat.
Hipolito, Portugese made or Petromax, German made are the ones to get. Stay well away from the Chinese copies, unsafe, tanks split causing a fireball.
Spares are readily available on the Internet.
Regards, Norman.

I too had a hippo for beach fishing back in the day and we used to wrap pies in foil and just balance them on top.
They could be a bit temperamental so switched to a Coleman dual mantle, there was something comforting about the roar of a pressure lamp, but to be honest I can't be bothered with the hassle nowadays as there are plenty of good battery lamps around. My beach fishing revolves around tip lights and head torches now and you hardly see a pressure lamp on the beach anymore and for camping I can't be bothered carrying the fuel, nor the lighting palaver.
Hi, yes I've got one. It's a brute of a lamp, bright enough to pick out the Heinkels! The reflector is highly recommended. So far I haven't experienced any problems with it, it works really well and can be adapted as a heater or to cook on. I'm not quite sure why they say it could be used as a heater though, as they say you shouldn't use it in a tent. I guess a house would be different. It makes a lot of noise too, so ideally this lantern should be used outdoors, around the campfire perhaps, and gives incredibly bright light very efficiently. I'm off to Briggs Farm in Dorset for a week on the 22 July and I'll be taking 'the beast' with me so I'll report back following that. At the moment I'm just trying to discover how long one fill of the tank lasts!
Hi I have got a colemans Northstar which I used for beach fishing a few years ago now which is a very bright light and you could wrap a pie in foil and place on the top so when then fish failed to show you still had something to warm the cockles of your heart

Brilliant idea!! We love our Northstar with its advertised 220 watts output it lights up the whole campsite. Only use Aspen 4T fuel though.
