If only using the halogen it sits on top of the electric hobs, if I need to use the hobs too it goes on a table.

Maybe look a using a heat resistant silicon mat.?
(check out ebay or even the likes of "poundshops")

The little one we used last time is from Argos and just coated hard board I think.
