Could anyone recommend or had any experience of LED lanterns, they seem to be quite rare.

Having used LED head torches I find they have great light output and battery life but there does not seem to be many lantern LED lights apart from something like these http://www.shop4gerber.co.uk/bonfire_blaze_latern_gerber.html.

TIA for any advice

thanks Delta, i have heard mention of these brighter LEDs but headtorches seem to be the first to have the newer technology with lanterns lagging behind. Needs to be battery driven too....

Theres an American site which reviews LED lights - try this link

http://www.flashlightreviews.com/reviews_index/reviews_index_markers.htm

The Gerber Bonfire light is reviewed as well as others

Tells you all about the different LEDs available.

Thanks Big Orange and welcome to the forum!

I bought a LED lantern a couple of weeks ago for £10(!) but have not had chance to test it out. Going for a couple of nights in Northumberland this weekend so fingers crossed will get a chance to see how bright it is......

I dont mean to sound funny but have you thought of making one. I made one about a year ago bought the parts from maplin and threw them in a small project box, it runs off 2 x AA batteries and will light a tent bedroom for about a months worth of nights. All I will say is that you may need to be good with superglue to fit a lense to the project box.

good luck,

John.

Thanks but I 'm too lazy to start building things, I injury myself too easily and I remember previous painful experiences with soldering irons

Hi Big Orange,

Had a great time in Northumberland, campsite we were going to stay at was not as I thought it would be so went to a C&C club site which was great. Its near Beadnell and highly recommended with the only downside being that the campsite is next to a main road with the beach at the otherside of it.

The LED light was ok but i would recommend getting a brighter version as on the lantern setting it was more of a glow in a two man backpacking tent. I'm sorry but i chucked the packaging out and there is no label on the torch so I cannnot give the brand name! It was £9.99 from Yeomans.......good as a torch though with 100 hrs of battery life.
