Hello. I'm after a good cookware set, pans, frying pan that sort of thing, that would suit a family of four (two adults two children). We cook a lot at home and have good kit (I'm very much of the 'buy well buy once' mindset), so I don't mind spending for something that will last/is good.
That said, I know price isn't an indicator of quality. What does anyone recommend please?
I have used the Outwell frying pan (bought separately) for home cooking as I liked it so much - it's lasted 3 years of regular use. The non-stick is beginning to go, but its a lovely size to cook in.
I'd say the set was quite reasonably priced to be honest.
I guess you may have to consider what you like cooking and on what you cook. Buying individual pieces may suit you best, although the stacking sets are neat
I noticed this on the Millets site when checking out he Feast set, and thought this would be a good kit for camping and days out:
Seeing as the pic's so small, here's the linky thingy: Ragley cutlery set
------------- Camping - emotional resilience in action, a triumph of hope over adversity and antidote to virtual reality.
I've just bought a set of Tefal Ingenio pans. I got them mostly because they stack. Not used then whilst away yet, but used them at home on the gas stove to try them out and I was very impressed. Don't worry about only having one handle, it is so easy to clip on and off it is no bother. You can get frying pans too. I got the 7 piece set when it was on offer.
I personally dislike non stick stuff and am happy with my stainless steel Versa pans.
I originally went for the vango 4 person stainless steel set with copper bottoms (approx. £35 amazon) but found the fry pan and largest pan too small for 2 adults & 3 children so opted for the Grunwerg Versa pan set, universal draining lid, 24cm lid (was less than £5 when I ordered) and clifford james coolbag was the perfect size to hold it all in.
I know this is all quite heavy for camping and the largest pan is huge but the quality is great and so much nicer to cook in than the flimsy feeling vango set I had.
Thanks for all the suggestions so far, really appreciate them.
Tynxuk, wow you are organised! I like it. I'm not a fan of non stick either, we only use stainless steel at home and cast iron (great for those arm muscles).
But I'm thinking that for occasional camping I might turn a blind eye to the non stick-ness if it gives me what I want in terms of size etc.
Every once in a while Tefal sell set of Ingenio pots and pans specifically for camping. I've found it to be very well made and usefully designed.
Sold as the Tefal Camping Set
Previously sold as the Jamie Oliver Survival Set.
It's worth checking the French amazon site from time to time, as they tend to stock a bigger variety of Tefal Ingenio sets.
I've got a set of the Tefal camping set which are over 10 years old and still going strong with all the non-stick intact, however I don't use the frying pans as frying pans but just as lids. I prefer to have a frying pan with a built in handle so I have 2, a Tefal camping frying pan and a 99p Ikea one (well it was when I bought it - it's £2.70 now ). We tend not to eat out much when we camp as I like camp cooking so they do get used a fair bit and are easy to clean.
Lakeland have reduced the Ingenio saucepans and frying pans reduced at the moment
That is a great set! We have most of that at home so I guess we could, feasibly, just bring our home stuff. I think for camping though it might be a bit heavy!!
I bought all 4 MSR Alpine Stowaway saucepans, and can stack 1 in 3; 2 in 4; with 1 being the smallest and 4 being the largest.
MSR probably makes the best stainless steel camping cookware, using thick gauge that does not buckle at high heat.
I also have a SS frying pan from MSR with detachable handle, however I have yet to use it, as I have 2 non-stick frying pans with folding or detachable handles, and a non-stick ripped grill pan with folding handle that I can use.
At home, I use SS pans and non-stick frying pans; and my preference is reflected in my camping gear.
If I were to splash out of a new set of saucepans for camping, or as a very generous wedding present, then I would opt for the Tefal Ingenio in Stainless Steel version. I saw it in France, and it was beautifully made, with a price tag to show for it - two pans plus a handle without lids was sufficient to buy all 4 Alpine Stowaway saucepans. However, they appear to be more affordable when I Googled it - a 3 SS pan set with 1 handle without lids is available via Amazon for just under 60 GBP plus P&P.
Bear in mind that cooking with SS is not for everyone, it does take some getting used to, and I seldom use my two SS frying pans at home as they can be a pain to clean (steel wool works wonders on SS, and I carry one in my camping kit to scrub the saucepans).

They are non stick and stack. We wanted large pans as we are a family of 5 (oldest was only 5 when we bought the set) but they grow up and eat more and eat even more when camping!

Also bear in mind that they only get used for a few weeks of the year , unlike your pans at home. we bought a set from Argos about 5 years ago, think three pans and a frying pan were thirty quid and they still look like new.
