Cannot set up my satalite 1st its in German so overcame that but have tried to find a salalite for the last 2 hours no such luck I can't find the right angle and the stupid lnb won't light up at all please help so I can try again in the morning
Although some receivers have a built in sat finder, it is easiar to use a self powered meter.
The SatLink 6906 is a little gem of a meter for non pros.
If your LNB is one of those that has an LED to inform you that the satellite has been found, that can also make life easiar, although it will light up at the first satellite that it finds, not the satellite that you are looking for.
Good luck, and persevere, it really is easy finding Astra2, once you have done it a few times.
Yes we have a led thing on it must we could not make it light up at all we will keep trying it cost too much to give up I just thought it would be easier
Hi just make sure you set receiver/tv to the satellite you want to receive i.e. Astra then it shouldn't light up when you are pointing at another satellite, that's how mine works (fool-proof)
good luck macaw
Firstly, don't give up. Have a look at www satelliteforcaravans.co.uk for a step by step guide. After you have done it once it really is quite easy.
You don't say if you are trying in the UK or abroad. If it is the UK then starting with the dish vertical always seems best for me. Point the dish towards the south and the, very slowly, rotate it eastwards. If you don't get anything, raise the dish a degree or so and start rotating again .
Once you have found it don't forget to lock the dish at the right elevation.
Good luck!

Are there other satellite dishes nearby? If so for starters try the same direction and elovation. Not very sceinticic but I found it generally worked.

Only if you can accurately guess the settings to within one degree of the dish you are copying!

Once you have found the satellite, to make life easier for future attempts make a note of the Dish elevation, this will be around 23Deg.
To do this you will require a Angle finder.
Google will tell you the elevation for the Astra2 Satellite at your exact location.
Once you have this reference point marked on the Dish, at a point were you can place an angle finder, preferable a Digital one.
Then the next time you use the system, you simply set the Dish to the relevant elevation using the angle finder.
Then it is just simply a case of panning the Dish from East to West of South, this will take almost all the guess work away.
A basic Digital angle finder can be had for under £20 these days.
The mount that we use for the Dish is Tripod type bike stand, that we got from Lidl, in fact it has 4 Legs, so I guess it should be called a Quad Pod!
Anyway the beauty of using the bike stand, is that it offers the Dish a perfectly verticle mount, whilst allowing the Dish to rotate East to West, the bike stand has a QR mechanism to lock the Dish into position once the satellite is located.
Some good info in that Linky from Vin Blanc, so many folk give up on satellite, when all that is needed is a little understanding of the techniques used on how to find that Bird!
Yep agree with marzie, such an app is very handy to ensure that you have line of sight to the Bird in the first place, not always an obvious situation, even for those with experience of setting up a satellite dish.
Of course I am old Skool, and use a specifically modified ships sextant for when line of sight comes into question.
