Hi, Does anyone run a 240v television from a leisure battery via an inverter? My 12v TV has just packed up and Although it was a 12v it wouldn't ran directly from 12v but I ran it via the invertor through the 12v/240v mains adaptor. So wondered if a 240v only TV would do the same.
Thanks Dave. I didn't want to buy one and find it didn't work. I have a 300w inverter, 88ah leisure battery and portable solar panel to keep it topped up.
I agree with Hacksaw Bob. If you are going to buy one anyway, go for a 12 volt one. A 240 volt one should run through an inverter ok, but it probably won't run for long due to the inefficiency of inverters. It will quite quickly flatten an 88ah battery.
I agree it would be easier to get another 12v but they are a lot more expensive than a 240v TV. I am on a limited income(state pension) and cant afford one at the moment. Keep looking for a 2nd hand one but non available in a reasonable distance from where I live.
I can quite understand Rose. Like you I am just on a state pension. Do you have any shops in your area that recycle stuff? Have you tried websites like freecycle, which cover your local area? Always worth a look.
My mains 18" Samsung TV takes 1.3 amps from the battery via the inverter. If it were to run directly off the battery it would take about 1 amp. (Calculated from TV wattage label)
So generally it's more efficient on 12v directly but don't worry about it. It won't flatten your battery like the doomsayers predict.
When I bought our 15" Cello TV back in 2013 it was not advertised as 12v but it is, and came with the mains adapter, so in theory the TV can run of just a 12v supply.
Will a 240v tv work ok if I run it from my caravan battery? The caravan battery is connected to a 100w solar panel. The main question is, will it run as normal?
Cheers.

Not directly it won't, you will need an inverter to convert 12 volts DC to 240 volts AC. The problem is that the inverter itself will use power on top of that used by the TV. If you have a decent inverter the TV should run exactly the same as it would off mains, but doing it this way would drain more power from the battery than using a 12 volt TV. If you haven't already got a decent inverter I would go for the 12 volt TV option, as a decent inverter probably wouldn't cost much less than a 12 volt TV. You'd need to do a bit of research. There are some cheap-and-nasty inverters out there, which are ok for running power tools etc, but things like TVs, computers etc are much more sensitive and might not work properly on one.
You can't run a 240v TV directly off the 12v battery if that is what you are asking!
You will need an INVERTER to convert 12v to 240v, and almost certainly a specific one known as a 'Pure Sine Wave Inverter' to avoid problems with the TV. Basic (cheapest) Inverters known as 'Modified Sine Wave Inverters' simulate the AC of mains electricity in a very crude way, and that can cause issues with electronic equipment, so best avoided.
Inverters are inefficient, with internal power wastage, overall you can use up to 1/3 more power from the battery than the end appliance being run would imply, so your battery runs down quicker than you might expect. For a modern LED TV and their minimal power demands, it's unlikely to be an issue, with older CRT and Plasma TV's the power demand can be much higher and may need some more thought.
To give specific advice on what Inverter would suit you, we'd need to know the details of your TV, to see it's power requirements. But in all likelihood a small Inverter sufficient to power just a modern LED TV would be only a few tens of pounds.
This is my preferred TV https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/284291812035?hash=item42311ccac3:g:0aMAAOSwM9hgms66. uses just on 1 amp where as my avetex uses 2.3 amps had it about five years although only 14" screen it been brilliant for what we want my only critic of it is the sound could be better but we run it through a blue tooth speaker most of the time

Others will advise on the solar panels, there are plenty of threads if you try searching.
There are also plenty of threads on (diesel) generators, one is very recent. Broadly speaking, the only people who like them are the users, everyone else dislikes the noise & smell.
