We use a double inflatable airbed. The first time we took it away i woke up in tears because it was SO cold. Then i read somewhere (Oh my god my camping geek is rearing it's ugly head) that '1 blanket underneath is worth 2 on the top'..and my god were they right, it was roasting!! But just as comfy as being in my own bed - minus the squeaks!)
Thermarests for me too! Fab things. Friend of mine just bought theirs from ebay for about £30 (bargain)...worth every penny, even if you have to pay full price!

infact it hold the dam bag in place so you can turn inside the bag.
and ain't that the truth!!!! Whilst I am loving my mummy sleeping bags when i first get into the thing, "Ooooh it's like sleeping in a big cocoon" by the morning i'm cursing as i try to unravel myself from the blasted hood! It's like waking up in a straight jacket.
We've tried roll mats, gave me backache, son didn't like it, airbeds - great if they stay inflated - mine didn't, son's did but like someone else said, a pain to inflate at the end a long day travelling, then having to get up in the night to re-inflate. Thermarest, great until No. 1 son pinched it to go to Glastonbury 2 years ago & left it there, Aluminium-frame camp-bed from Argos - brilliant, so comfy, especially with the foam cover from the sun lounger on it. Trial and error, I'm afraid to find what suits you best.
I slept on a foam mat for the first couple of years of camping ....no problems, fine for kids and adults alike ..... We've now got Thermarest self inflating matresses - they are so comfy and warm. ....... Each bed type has advantages and disdvantages, and we're all different.
Liz, same here. I have never slept on an airbed or a campbed but since I have never had the inclination to try then that must mean that my Thermarest Basecamp is fine for me. And all that pumping up and deflating airbeds - I'm way too lazy for that! If I was going to buy something else, it would only be one of the super-duper wider thicker Thermarests. MT

I slept on a double blow itself up airbed, it was so cool it plugs into the mains and do it its self, and if you wake up and want more air in just press a button near youur hear and away you go. When deflating in sucks the air out from the same place.
