My trailer has a limit of c.220kg (it's in lbs on the sticker, I can't remember the exact figure and it's too dark, wet and cold to look!) but for next season I'm thinking of attaching some bikes to the trailer somehow - I have a bike rack that fits whilst towing, but because the trailer has quite a small A frame, you can only really fit one bike on - I guess it would work better with a caravan.

This would most likely take it over the load limit of the trailer (the car is ok for 750kg un-braked) , so I wondered what needs to be done to increase it? The trailer is sufficiently old that it isn't properly plated, it just has one of those stickers people used to the numbers on - each digit is a separate sticker even. So, would it just be a case of getting 350kg mounting plates welded on (it seems 250kg suspension is 4 bolts and 350kg is 6) and then replacing the suspension?

Any advice much appreciated.

No mot's for trailers so you can do pretty much what you like with an old trailer. To make it look good you can buy blank trailer vin plates from ebay & a set of punches to put whatever weight you want on.

Obviously check parts, axle etc for weight stamps on them. With an old trailer if you are pulled in a roadside check it's got to look roadworthy & safe but in the absence of any recorded data about trailer all they would be interested in is that you are not exceeding anything they have data about, ie tow weight of tow vehicle & also load index of tyres.

Replace the suspension/axle stubs and probably the wheels and tyres also.

What are the wheels and tyres rated at?
