Hi all is it possible to tow a caravan and also use tow ball for a bike rack at the same time tow car is Range Rover sport caravan Bailey ranger need to take sons bike many thanks for any help

I think the answer depends on the total noseweight allowance of the car. We used a towbar bike rack on our Kia Sorento but the noseweight allowance was 140kgs.

Hi David thanks for your reply I will check info but I forgot to say we have a Landrover heavy duty tow ball and a Bailey ranger caravan so I think we will be ok but could you tell me what bike rack you use so I can have a look many thanks for your help kath

If you have a bolt on flange towball then you need one of these. Towball will have to be unbolted to fit mounting bracket behind it so you may need longer bolts. This is the type you need if you want to tow at same time. Other types of rack fit on towball so you cannot tow at same time.

You will need to ensure there is sufficient turning circle with bikes mouted so they do not clout caravan when you turn. If you want to carry bikes without caravan then you will need a lightboard with numberplate.

I have a maxxraxx premier 4 bike carrier complete with webbing, light board and Kit bag only used twice, would be willing to sell for £190 + p&p

If you are only carrying one bike...........would it not be easier (and cheaper!) to carry it IN the caravan ?

I had one once on the back of my Discovery but ended up giving it away.
The principal sounds good but you soon get fed up taking it off to open the rear door. Also, even with the 150kg tow ball limit it undoubtedly affected the steering.
I found the easiest way to carry just one was to remove the front wheel (using a quick release bolt) and stick the lot standing up in the boot.

Mine wasn't one of those so I didn't know that.
Having said that, is it possible to lower it with the caravan there?
If not, you still couldn't open the tailgate, or could you?

How often d'you need to open the tailgate whilst towing?

Pretty rare for us ... or, a little planning would sort it out?

We have a maxxraxx, but don't use it with the caravan .... bikes go inside on floor standing 'parking' racks. the maxx is used once on site and caravan off.
