I saw a 'portable' camping fridge for sale in Woolworths the other day that uses the car cigarette lighter to 'cool', and then it is supposed to stay cool for 24 hours. Price is around £30. Does anybody have any experience of one of these? Are they any use? Worth the money?
£30 is very cheap.. These type of coolers only cool to about 20 degrees C below ambient temperature, so if its above 25C outside temperature your milk and meats won't be safe they might go off. Use ice packs in conjunction with the cooler. They are ok for short term use though. Or get yourself a Combicool 3 way, these will freeze on the lowest settings.. Great for meats n milk. Fantastic for beers, oh it comes with an ice tray too.

Just got back from Aldi with a 240v/12v cooler 25c below ambient. The fan is a little loud but it is very cold. £29.99. I had something called a micro chiller from Wollies, worse than usless, too small & it didn't get that cold.
I would not bother with 12v. I have found that 12v operation just drains the battery very quickly. Get a 3 way and run it on gas. We have had a Combicool previously and ran it on gas. It was very cold.
I wasn't planning on using the 12v Andrew, I've had problems in the past with car battries lol. I just bought a new hook up so the 240v is a cheaper alternative to the combicool(although I lust after them)

This cooler seems a good buy but where does it say 25c below ambient as the website only mentions 20c below.
Yeah you're right, it is only 20 below, but Im sitting here drinking ice cold beer out of it(running off the mains) The micro chiller was supposed to be 25 below & that wasn't half as cold as this one.

But seriously do you think this cooler will do the job in the height of british summer.
I`m almost ready to run of down me local aldi`s and snap one of these up.
I mostly camp in Scotland jayjay, I think it'll be fine, but I wouldn't like guess how it would perform in the South of France. The fan seems loud so it would have to be switched off at night or stored in boot of the car(?)
BTW the beer is too cold so it's been switched off for the night, I won't open it and see how cold they are in the morning.
There wasn't many left in my local.
IG's Dad, it was running from late this morning till 7pm tonight, none of the electrical bits, fan cooler bar thingy(Im not a real engineer)cables & plug felt "overheated".
Have taken the plunge and got some wine & beer cooling at the moment!! Only a couple left in our local Aldi in Whitefield. For £29.99 with the 12v and 240v plug, I think its a mega bargain!
I meant how long can I run it for on 240v? British Summer rarely tops 25 degrees so chilled to 5 degrees will be fine for me.
I did ask if it doesn't do what I want, can I take it back and the woman said anytime within 12 months as long as I have the receipt. No questions asked, full refund! I'll try it for the summer and then may take it back if we have a really good summer!!
Off to drink some chilled wine now!!!
