Our camping equipment plus 1 large daft lurcher means I've outgrown my Merc Estate +Thule Roofbox. Red Cap Garages is 20 mins away from us and are the UK dealer for Lider trailers. Been down there and looked at `Lider Seville and lid, Spare tyre and side extenders. Looked good but now wondering for circa £200 more if we shouldn't go fo the Saragos. Bigger payload and very slightly larger so a little more cubic space. Plus it has a jockey wheel.
We have the Lider Seville in the spec you describe with a jockey wheel and roof bars, its a great trailer, worth the 450 mile round trip it took to pick it up! I was limited to the Seville by space to store it at home, also I was worried about the extra room needed while on a site. I have ours packed to the max with lots of heavy camping gear, it stays within about 30kg of its max weight. In this spec, the trailer weighs 200kg empty [/IMG]
We got the Lider Alicante in 2009 back then was £800 with ABS Lid, RoofRack, Jokey Wheel and Spare Wheel c/w Side Mount.
The Alicante is 750kg same as the Saragos.
Lider went a bit mad in 2012 and made the internal size of the Seville, Alicante and Saragos all slightly smaller.
They also decided to drop the Alicante from the UK range but is still available in France.
They simply made the sides shorter and not as tall as the older models.
They also made the ABS lid a lot more shallow, and dispensed with the optional 100kg roof rack. although you can get Cross Bars.
And to top it all for good or bad they replaced the Steel Floor with a treated wooden floor.
On the upside though they did introduce as an optional extra Side Extentions, and that for me makes up for all the negative changes, I guess they were just trying to keep the base prices down.
To me 750kg is the go to spec for a none braked trailer, not to mention it the max the law permits, unlucky for the French as they are limited to just 500kg!
At the last weigh in our fully loaded trailer came to 540kg, empty it sits at 215kg so the kit that time was 325kg.
I do have to keep an eye on the weights, as the current car VW Golf Mk7 TDi is rated to just 660kg for a none braked trailer.
Thank you gully101 and Francais. Good to see how the Seville set-up sits with a car and with weights loaded etc. Given that we would need to purchase the jockey wheel additionally I reckon we will for the Saragos. Thanks for the advice.
We will be towing our camping stuff down to the South of France a couple of times a year - my wife is French and although we have a wee house down there, she is keen for us to go camping in other areas during the summer season.
Just keen that what we end up with suits us for some time to come :-)
Just to add, the Seville is plated at 600kg max weight and the roof rack that goes over the top of the ABS lid is still rated at 100kg according to my manual. its bolted to a large angle frame under the lid that fits all around the top of the trailer, I suspect the Saragos one would be the same.
Yep Cevenol, the team at Red Cap know there stuff, my Trailer came with the newer type 13pin Plug, which is far more secure than the old 7pin units.
Also the 13pin Plug intergrates the car alarm system, although that is more to do with the cambus wiring harness that is used.
We were on a tight budget at the time of purchase, and it was the drop in VAT from 17.5% down to 15% that made me buy that year, as I was also getting the towbar fitted at the same time by Red Cap, ooch that was an expensive day out!
We have since towed that icle Lider Trailer down to Aubenas (Ardeche) and Frejus on numerous occasions.
The Trailer is rock steady on the autoroute's and legal at 81mph!
Total hieght of our unit is 1.97m so we use the Fast 2m Tag Lane, to ensure we only ever get charged the solo car class 1 rate.
Thanks all. Saragos does seem the way to go. Getting pressure from other half to buy a secondhand trailer after she was discussing with a camping colleague of hers who was aghast at the cost. I'm not convinced, feel happier knowing the trailer has been purchased new with warranty, etc. I don't like the thought of buying something I know little about, especially when I am such a novice in this area.
This is our 3rd trailer in upgrading from a roof box.
1st - small trailer with canvas lid - Erde 102
2nd - Small trailer with ABS lid - Erde 102 (?)
3rd - Average trailer with ABS lid - Brenderup 1150. This has large wheels and is a dream to tow (so Mr F says).
Yep, finding a Trailer like the Saragos used on eBay etc, is a game of luck and patience combined, plenty of the little Erde's on there as folk often buy them, then soon discover they are too small.
For around the same price as the Lider, you could look at Anssems, there is a dealer over in Chorley.
Thanks to all for the advice. So we popped back to Red Cap garage and have ordered a Saragos saver kit, having tow bar fitted as well so my wallet is going to be hit quite severely :-) However, excited about sorting out the garage and loading up Lider next weekend ready for the next camping trip. Guys at Red cap are excellent, lovely people to deal with. Recommend highly.
Now looking at forking out an additional few quids on an almax chain and lock and a cable alarm. Just so we have peace of mind.
Another for Red Cap, they sorted my Seville out last year, very good to deal with, family firm and if still the same, the dad did the handover and talked me through everything on the trailer.

Yep Cevenol good choice going for the Saragos, even though it is only slightly larger than the Saville, it's the 750kg over 600kg that IMHO is worth the extra paying for.
Had the Alicante not been 750kg, I also would have probably gone for the Saragos back in 2009.
As you may see in my gallery image, I soon added a 520lt RoofBox and 150lt Trailer Tongue Box.
That Almax chain looks good, we use a 2m length of galvanised 19mm chain with a CISCA Box padlock.
Handy for padlocking to the towbar when parked up, and to be fair is more of a visual deterrent, than anything else.
I also use a couple of those 110db Alarm padlocks, one through the hasp on the locking ABS lid, and the other just gets added to the chain.
You can only do what you can do, so far as security, and I have another little suprise inside the lid should some scrote get as far as opening it.
In fact comming back from France July 2015, the nice young lady security officer at Dunkerque ferry port, asked me to unlock the Trailer ABS lid so that they could have a look inside, thankfully, she was unable to raise the lid, due to the weight of stuff in the RoofBox.
and gave up, still my little suprise was disarmed at the time, but it may have lead me to a conversation that I would rather not have with an official!
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
