Hi,

We have recently upgraded a lot of our camping equipment and have bought a Campingaz Chef Vario and the 907 butane to go with it (along with the regulator and hose).

I was wondering if there were any good source of information on gas safety when camping? Having not used this type of bottle or stove before it will be a bit of a learning curve so any advice would be appreciated.

Where do people store their cylinders during the day if the weather is hot, will it be ok in the tent?

Thanks

Butane is a low pressure fuel. No problem at all to store in high temp. Even at 50 degrees C it only stands at about 50psi.

Have a look at the "Gas for Tent Campers" pdf linked from this Camping and Caravanning Club advice page.

Cook outside or under tarp & not closed in tent you will be fine. For a gas cylinder to explode from excess heat would need 400degC.

And if it was 400 degrees C the gas cylinder would be the LAST thing you would be worried about

Thanks for all the replies, it has been very helpful. Can't imagine I would ever cook inside a tent though!

I have used butane gas burners inside tents to cook food, and heat water for coffee/tea.

Circumstances due to inclement weather, and an insistant wife were the reason.

I took steps to minimise setting the tents alight, and to avoid asphyxiation due to lack of oxygen, and noxious fumes.

Build up of condensation was the worst thing that happened.

However, I do not make a habit of it, and do not suggest anyone else does it, especially if tenting alone without experience.

In the beginning there was darkness.
Then I bought a tent.

Another good habit to get into is always to turn the gas off completely when not cooking. Although your camp stove should be fully sealed that can't be taken for granted on a cheapish item which is moved regularly and left unused for long periods.

Your regulator should have an on/off valve on it for this purpose. Alternatively you could just unclip the regulator from the bottle

Yep we do all the cooking in Cabanon PN20 Utility Tent, it seems made for the job.

As for the CampinGaz 907, it has to be the perfect solution for camping, of course the actual price of the gas is ridiculous, but for the conveinence is a price worth paying.

We carry two 907's to ensure that we are never out of gas.

We only go camping to the South East of France during July, so it's quite hot when we are there, no issues at all with storage of the 907's our spare 907 is kept in a vented locker on the trailer.

You can put Butane or Propane in a cheap plastic 500ml pop bottle on a super hot day and its fine.

Not recommended though. But its possible.

As mentioned the biggest issue is the carbon monoxide. There have been several deaths in the past few years. You really need good ventilation when its on and for a while afterwards.

Also gas is a wet fuel, it gives off quite a bit of condensation which is not ideal for camping stuff whether a van or a tent. Good ventilation cures that also.

Butane and propane gasses are heavier than air and do not support life, though they are non toxic.
A slow leak overnight inside a sleeping inner tent can replace air at ground level and lead to asphyxia. Store gas bottles in the porch of the tent where any gas may vent under the tent walls and away.

Check the washers on your regulators or on directly screwed in stoves, heaters and lamps. If the washer is damaged it will leak. A gas leak will either catch fire or build up and explode in a confined space.
