I have just purchased a TT and now busy buying the bits and pieces for our great voyage. I have the electric hook-up with a fusebox rcd thingy. I was wondering what sort of electrical equipment can I use and how many at once, without risk of blowing the rcd.
Hi, don't worry if your rcd trips you can just reset it after removing the overload. The rating should be marked on it. A bigger problem is if you try to run too much at once and trip the campsite supply, although you will normally only trip the supply to your pitch, if the circuit breaker box is left open then you can reset it yourself. Quite a lot of campsites lock their boxes and if you trip those you have to go to Reception and ask them to come and reset it. They don't mind once or twice but if you do it often they can get a bit narky. It becomes a bit more difficult 'after hours' when the Reception is closed.
Do a search for EHO. Some kind member did a brilliant chart explaining how much power each individual item uses. Think this was about 2 years ago. I printed it off and it is packed away with the camping equipment. We have a television, small toaster, kettle, Small oven, 2x electric lights and phone chargers not ALL at the same time but have never had a problem.
Thanks Phil and Margaret for your time to help. Just read in the caravan and camping magazine that if you use a microwave and a kettle at the same time it will trip the fusebox!!! so I am a little wary of using a number of items at once.
Hi KB, A general rule of thumb is to only use one 'Power' item at a time. Low wattage items like lighting, TV, Fridge or Coolbox can usually be left on all the time. 'Power' items are things like Kettle, Iron, Microwave, Electric Oven, Grill etc. Where possible buy low wattage versions of these items and then you should be OK on the Continent as well. I can give you a list of typical ratings if you wish but as I said above if you use only one of these at a time you'll be OK.
