Hi folks don't know how to put this I have just purchased a Caravan and also have two Granddaughters who come camping with me, They are aged 11 and 12. Now I have the caravan they will be wanting to use the cassette toilet ! My awkward question is , is it ok to dispose of sanitary towels into said toilet or not ?
Definitely not. You only have to look at the size of the emptying spout to decide the reason why. Only human waste and toilet paper is to be disposed of in a cassette toilet and nothing more.
Are sanitary towels flushable down a normal toilet? If they are then ok to put them in a cassette. However many users prefer to only use cassette at night for peeing which makes it more pleasant for emptying rather than the full use you make of your toilet at home. Daytimes use the campsite facilities.
Probably a beter idea is to have plastic rubbish bag in waste bin in caravan & put used sanitary towels in that at night. Tell girls that caravan bog is just for peeing in & to use campsite facilities for everything else. I’m sure it will be you emptying cassette so in your own interests.
The site I am on now using the system opensauce suggests, only thing going into the toilet is toilet paper apart from ones and twos. On a previous site even used toilet paper went in the bin, yuk! It was emptied twice daily but still yuk!
I guess you lot don't frequent ladies public or campsite loos. If you did then you would find a sanitary disposal bin in each cubicle. If in your own home/ caravan a small lined swing bin in the bathroom is what you need.
When we got our first caravan 15 years ago.,the salesman said on the hand over. Only things that go in cassette toilet are what you had to eat and drink. and toilet paper.
If you are on a site with no facilites then the easy solution is to use either doggy poop scoop bags or better still perfumed nappy bags and tie them up securing any unwanted odours and dispose of them in the bin.
Awkward subject: the girls may use tampons or panty liners. Sanitary towels are what their gran would have used.
But as others have said, nothing except the 3 Ps (pee poo & toilet paper) goes down the toilet. Caravan Cassette or posh M&S Ladies loo. Ever. Walk along a beach and you'll see why. Plus some pads are lined with plastic, and have a gel that absorbs fluid which makes the whole thing get bigger & bigger if it's sitting in liquid. Wherever we are, the rule is always Never Flush, always Bag it & Bin it. Same rule as nappies.
The supermarkets have budget nappy sacks. E.g. 100 for 30p in Morrisons. Not see through, very discreet.
You might want to get a budget pack of baby wipes, so the girls can freshen up between showers - that wipe goes in the same disposal bag, as they're not made of just paper. My neighbour blocked the drain by flushing away the wet wipes, they don't shred up like toilet paper.
Pack painkillers too. Paracetamol, nothing fancy. Heat helps, a hot water bottle can sooth cramps.
Well done for your forethought though!
steve.c I would concur with all of the above and would like to say that this is not an awkward question at all but a very practical and important one and I take my hat off to you for thinking about it Your granddaughters clearly have a very sensible and thoughtful grandad
However when I read "awkward question", I wondered. Then you said you had bought a caravan....that is awkward for 'proper' campers like me!!! Thought that you had posted on a tent campers forum
For years we took our 2 granddaughters with us and i used to keep little bags in the cupboard so that they could drop them in there then they used to put them in a plastic bag then put them in the bin on site. Never had any problems.
We have a small flip topped bin for non flush products both at home and in the caravan.
As said the only thing that goes in the loo is pee, poo & toilet paper
