The equipment I have has been the result of trying combine our preferred bits and bobs from years of having a caravan and camping.

Our kit has ended up like this, a weatherproof 6 x 4 trailer with the option of being able to carry four bikes, 220 watts of solar power with a 105ah leisure battery providing up to 300 watts/240 volts to provide lighting and tv set up. We only use the tv at bedtime.

We have a 30 year old relum florida frame tent (love my £70 canvas bargain)
Dual burner/grill with 907 gas bottles and vintage hagen beenstalk style camp kitchen, we use a roof box to carry quilts airbeds etc. Cooking stuff, plates pans etc are packed into plastic boxes.

I suppose being a bit ocd has helped me accumulate gear that a disaster prepper could be proud of, jerry cans for fuel and water, thetford portaloo, first aid and electronics are packed into waterproof ex army ammo boxes...lists for this and that....get the picture?

I am now preparing to go to the far north west of Scotland and I am beginning to think how I have ended like this and sometimes feel like I am planning a military logistics operation, I suppose I am just trying to provide the best experience for the other half and the kids......but sometimes it feels a bit over the top, does anybody else feel like this?

That is what finally drove us to getting a caravan.

Too much stuff packed into a car (no trailer for us!) taken somewhere unloaded set-up enjoyed, packed away again - like tetrus often with a wet tent, etc....

I don't have half the gear you seem to have but it still feels like a military operation every time I go camping.

On a couple of occasions I have packed up camping completely and sold all my gear only to find I was having withdrawal symptoms so had to buy it all again...and it always costs more when you have to buy it again!

I decided the solution was to cut down on as much gear as possible and just take my basic needs but then I decided I needed a heater so bought an EHU unit. Then of course I had 3 sockets to make use of so I bought an electric kettle and toaster...and microwave...and electric airbed pump...and...well, you get the picture.

Like Katieep, we eventually stumbled from enormous bill-of-lading with "tenting gear" to a caravan.

I miss the simplicity of being in a tent, but I love the flexibility of having a caravan - being able to easily do an "overnighter" (there are six of us).

What I have realised is that there is a trap even with caravanning that there is an amazing amount of stuff you didn't realise you needed.

Your need for an item is inversely proportional to the space to accommodate it.

There is plenty of space in my tent for stuff I need but the more space I fill with stuff I need the less space there is for me.

We don't take that much stuff, never having got involved with EHU.
Simply basking in the sunshine of my presence is enough to bring joy to my family.

Next trip to a campsite is in May. No EHU, two man force ten, double air mat, sleeping bags, head torches, tarp and trangia. Oh yeah, two chairs.
Even with the big tent, it all fits in the
back of an estate with a little roofbox. We have cut down on the volume rather than the amount of gear we take for a big EHU camp. The kitchen unit packs up to half the size of the old one, likewise beds etc

Yep, OP a camper after my own heart, check out my gallery kit photo.

Like you we wan’t as many home comforts as is possible, and that includes full en-suite in the tent and 1m satellite tv system.

For us it’s a 1,115 miles to the campsite in Frejus, from home here in North Manchester, and that journey involves 3 over night stops at Premiere Classe budget hotels, the road trip is all part of the holiday experience for us, and we just love it.

Although this year, due to a change in company car policy, we will be going camping lite, so no trailer.

On the upside, the 6 hours that it takes us to set up all the kit, will be greatly reduced this year.

It is quite a daunting prospect, although the £50 saving on the ferry crossing is quite welcome, we have done camping lite before, so I guess we can do it again.
