Not sure I’m explaining this clearly! The fridge is under counter so has three shelves. However, they’re so shallow that it’s difficult to store anything much ... the depth of the fridge is virtually halved by all the gubbins in the back of it. Does that make any sense at all? Struggling to cope with it even for a weekend away.

Is that common?

You can usually remove a shelf or shelves and move them around to make more room. That usually helps.

Our old caravan had a very small fridge. It looked big from the outside but was tiny inside. The Dometic one in our current caravan is much better. Plenty of room for both lemons and tonic (to go with the gin ahem).

Agree if you're used to a weekly shop, the on-board fridge is small. But we buy local while we're away, even just for a weekend, and use the drawers for items that don't need a fridge (e.g. bread rolls).
We find the freezer section is disproportionately large - our previous MH had room for two ice cube trays & no more.
So yes, the on-board fridge takes a bit of adjustment but it's do-able.

A situation that has been addressed in the more expensive van now with tall fridge freezers. Your only solution is to take an additional Waeco type mini chest freezer and keep in the awning

Depends on your needs, but my Lunar's Dometic fridge can have the Icebox/freezer compartment removed (just un-clips and pulls out) to increase capacity of fridge part. Have you checked to see if your fridge has this facility?

I also take a 3-way 'camping' fridge if I have a lot of chilled food to take/store. Also useful to keep food chilled on journey before van fridge gets cold enough (up to 8 hours from switch on!). Either sits on spare dinette seat or in awning.

We've just been away for the first time in our van and also thought the same, but was surprised how deep the blue box was on the door at the bottom, fitted quite a bit in there.

But for longer stays definitely taking my igloo box for our drinkies x
