I know this has come up a few times in the past from a google, but what are the latest idea on induction hobs? pref a twin one.
I am thinking of ditching the gas and double hob and going to an induction hob, main as less to carry in the van (I have a camper van, but set the kitchen up in the awning, as I have a Kampa one where I can cook outside but under the cover of the porch, so no smells in the awaning or van).
I only ever camp where there is hook up, normally 10amp or more, but this summer I am on one site for a few days with 6.5amp hook up.
I quite often cook with 2 pans as like my curry or pasta dishes, but one thing I have noticed is that the standard wind shield for the camping kitchens isn't wide enough for a double hob, or 2 singles next to each other, however are they really needed for induction hobs? does the shield help keep the pan a bit warmer and therefore cook faster?
Any recommendations from people for ones that aren't really high wattage but cook just as fast, or there abouts as a Camping Gaz double hob?
I did a quick test to see what kind of amps they used, and to be fair you can use an induction hob on 6amp you just have to have it on the right setting if on 6amp.
I've had a variety of electric hobs for camping and the only one I'd call 'good' is a cheapo Aldi / Lidl induction one. It's by far the most efficient, and you can select the wattage before you start heating - so for 6A EHU, that'd mean 1200w. We use it inside the awning, with a windshield, but that's to stop splatters and to stop the pans from sliding off. They're glass topped, so if you spill some water and are on a slope, your pan may slide about a bit.
Last year we had a kitchen extension built and I wanted to equip it with gas ovens and 5 burner hob. Not a chance! Doesn’t seem possible to buy a gas oven these days and gas hobs were few and far between.
We’ve ended up with 2 state of the art multi function electric ovens. The bit I was most sceptical about was the hob. We’ve ended up with a multi zone state of the art induction hob.
I told the salesman, “Gas is much faster and more efficient and I don’t
Believe in this new fangled electric stuff, you can’t beat a real flame!”
He proceeded to demonstrate that it was both quicker and more efficient and didn’t heat up the pan handle, only the pan. Now a convert I will sing the praises of the induction hob from the rooftops.
Now I wouldn’t have anything else! Technology moves on and the induction is definitely the way to go.
We’ve had a Lidl one in the caravan for years. They’re even better now so go for it for camping its easy to clean and very efficient.
