Hi folks - We are looking to upgrading our Erde122 (with extension sides) to something considerably bigger. I would prefer sonething lower with bigger floor pan (easier to load/remove items and prefer low centre of gravity).
I am considering a 8ftx4ft trailer. My concern is whether campsites will allow on pitch along with large tent and car. Does anyone have any problems with larger trailers being accepted on site??.
I realise bigger is better when it comes to trailers but where is the line when a trailer is too big in your opinion?
You may have trouble on some sites. I have recently bought a tent which is 7.5 metres x 4.5 metres and certainly one campsite I enquired at wanted an extra £5 a night for tents over 7 metres. I have no doubt I will occasionally have problems at other sites.
I have no doubt at all that if you have a trailer bigger than my tent, plus a tent, plus a car, that you will find some problems. Best to phone a campsite first to ask.
Just to clarify Bob, the trailer in question is 8ftx4ft, so 2.4m x 1.2m... ish!
Agree with everything else though. Always best to ring and discuss directly with the relevant site, if there is the slightest doubt regarding pitch sizes and/or what is allowed on said pitch.

Silly me - lol. I thought it was a damned big trailer - lol.
We’ve got a trailer that is approx 8’x4’ and an Air tent that is probably 3 times that size. So far used it on one UK campsite and two French without issue. However I do remember some UK sites charge extra for a trailer similar to if you turn up with a second car, certainly there are a couple around Salcombe in Devon that do this.
The French sites are sometimes a bit more restricted on pitch size with hedges etc so you may have to squash everything on to your defined pitch space but I think it really does depend on each campsite so if you’re worried then phone ahead.

For us no there are no downsides. We used to ram everything in the car and overload the suspension as a result. The trailer takes the hassle out of packing, because it’s big enough there are no more games of giant Tetris trying to squash everything in. The foot print difference of a large to small trailer is not that much, so if you’re getting a trailer get one big enough and enjoy the full benefit. We have gone for an Anssems GT750 (the wider one) 2.11m long. With the hard top we also put 5 bikes across the top of it so no more bikes on the car roof.
Buying a trailer costs money obviously but by buying the right thing for your needs rather than something that is just a bit too small you can make it all so much easier and enjoyable. Don’t be that person that lugs a trailer about and then also has to still pack a roofbox as well!
We have erde 193 with extensions and ABS lid, approx 6x4
No issues so far, one quite commercial site always charges for trailers, which we know and accept, but no others have so far. I always put a comment in 'additional requirements ' stating space for domestic camping trailer. One site checked the size and then said fine, no charge ,but they do charge for very big trailers... Whatever that is.
Adding the comment avoids any surprises, often sites have different size pitches they allocate depending on unit so only fair if I have to pay a little extra for the bigger pitch as long as charge reasonable. A car, trailer and big tunnel tent take a lot of space.
One site we stayed on was really tight, only just big enough to get everything on and I had to park mirror to mirror with the next pitch who had the same issue so does depend somewhat what else you want on your pitch.
Most sites should be fine if you are upfront, if it's an issue for them, or the charge is excessive, vote with your wallet.
I think our local tip charges for commercial vehicles and trailers bigger than 1.5m. It is £15 a year if it is for your domestic rubbish rather than a business rubbish/waste.
We have only once paid extra for our small trailer. Unless I had my heart set on the site I would avoid it.
