Hi all , I have a Ice Q electric cooler box that has only lasted a season and for some reason has stopped blowing cold air? It’s working fine but doesn’t make the cooler box cold!
Appreciate any ideas.
As it's a hot/cool box, the fault may lie in the changeover switch, as the fan is running, obviously some power is getting through OK. Try switching the changeover switch rapidly back and forth a few time (with power off) to clean up contacts, then try again, and/or try it on the hot setting and see if warm air is generated.
The core of the unit is a Thermoelectric/Peltier solid state cooling/heating device, that has no moving parts (disregarding the air circulating fan), with generally no user serviceable/repairable parts as such, there will possibly be a small circuit board with some control electronics as well.
If it works at either cooling OR heating, the Thermoelectric/Peltier device is OK and the fault lies in the switch or any control circuits. Any detected fault doesn't really help you as the unit is not intended to be repairable. I and I'm sure a few others here with enough technical knowledge could possibly rectify some faults, but for a non-technical person, it's probably sadly now just an unpowered coolbox, or junk!
There is remarkably little to fail in them, usually it's the fan motor that dies, rendering the thing pretty useless, but that is not your problem. Hopefully a 'waggle' of the switch will bring it back to life!
Yep, good answer from Monty15, reality is that with such items they are kind of disposable, and there is probably some built in obsolescence, as such units sell in hundreds of thousands each year, if not millions.
Although I have had one of the Aldi versions for over 15 years, and I just wish it would die, so that I can justify chucking it in the skip, but the damn thing just keeps working, although was only ever designed to cool, not heat.
Just a thought, but have you tried both 12v and mains, as I believe that unit works of either, not that it would make any difference, but you never know.
