no secret at all, they simply dont work. you are best off either weighing the bottle and doing the maths or boiling a kettle and pour that over and you will see the freeze line to indicate how much is left inside
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.

They are basically a Liquid Crystal thermometer with a different scale on them, they ONLY work WHEN you are drawing off significant amounts of gas which causes a noticeable temp drop inside the cylinder due to the vaporisation of gas from the liquid state. It's supposed to show the liquid level by the difference in temp below and above the liquid level. TBH, if you were drawing off enough gas for one to work, you'd likely see a condensation layer, or even a frost layer if drawing enough gas, and environmental conditions correct, on the cylinder wall just above the liquid level, so the gauge is practically redundant!
As already stated, pretty close to useless, unless you are using it whilst running something like heating with a high gas consumption. Multiple burners on a cooker might do it, just the fridge, almost certainly not!
The other level indicator type that doesn't really work is the gauge fitted to the cylinder outlet. It's basically only a pressure gauge, and the pressure doesn't vary much until the cylinder is practically empty, at which point it's 'stating the bleeding obvious'!
I purchased a magnetic gas level indicator about 14 years ago but because they are magnetic they only attach to steel gas cylinders (which I was using at the time) and not the aluminium type. However, I found it to be pretty useless as well so I eventually chucked it in the rubbish bin because in my view it was an object that was definitely not fit for purpose.
We also fell for it and bought one, it is attached to a full 6kg spare full Calor bottle and is showing empty.
Alternatively you could by a Safefill bottle, then you can see how much gas you have.
If you have two bottles it doesn't matter how much you have left. Simply run one until empty, switch over when it is and change the empty at your leisure.

Bought one a few years ago, it was so good (not) I didn’t even bother taking it off the empty bottle when I exchanged it, phrase that comes to mind is chocolate teapot/ chocolate fireguard
