Not tried one.
I'd be doing some serious research on the cost of the gas canisters and how long each one could reasonably be expected to last.
Might be cheap to purchase but!!!!

lorry drivers have a small unit for their cabs when doing wait and tip operations, believe it runs on diesel...[not sure of manufacturer or any other details] maybe some of those "knights of the road" on here may be able to give more details

they last about 3 hours one can each can cost about £2.50

it is not the sort of thing you would leave running for half a day anyway so cost wise thet seem like a good option. But I have never used one so I dont know how effective they are at heating

and I guess my big worry is safety

i think they are (or,were) a bit cheaper than that, pre pandemic ,our local B&M they were 4 for £4, but are now 4 for £6

I still have an indoor gas heater that runs of butane canisters.

I vaguely remember a can would last about 1.5h on high on a cold winter's night when I was in a draughty poly tent without a sig.

I'd rather have a Campingaz R heater running off a refillable 901 cylinder. They can be picked up for £16 2nd hand on Ebay. Those aerosol cans lose pressure rapidly and although cheap to buy are expensive to keep replacing.
The same 901 cylinder can be used for heating or lighting as you need it.
A gas lantern will produce quite a lot of heat anyway.

Not a good idea to run them in a tent or confined space as they use up the oxygen making you drowsy and you may never wake up!.

Indeed!

Although the heat is safe to use indoors, it does stipulate in well-ventilated areas.

I used it inside a Khyam Chatworth tent as it was draughty without a SIG as a secondary heater in the living area, as the fan heater was not sufficient on its own (it was December and very cold - I had frost on the tent in the morning!).

Try having a look here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONO49U6blTM

Dan has a good review of his experience with a few heaters, may be worth a look.

His YouTube channel is also worth a look, some really good tips!

I watched it, and he recommended a fan heater, and did not recommend a gas heater for reasons already mentioned.

I looked at those heaters a while ago and the instructions said that they should not be used in an enclosed space.

There was a story going around many years back of someone that bought a gas heater (DO NOT USE IN DOORS) and left it on low in their child's tent compartment to then wake up in the morning to a dead kid.

I personally think that these are sold without the clear warning required that these are dangerous when used in doors. Yes, we may be lucky and have enough natural air flow to qualify as a well ventilated room but personally, I would only use one of these pointing in to the entrance of a tent awning but would probably just pop another jumper on and avoid the anxiety.

Diesel heaters. I have one in our camper van that was fitted a few weeks back.

They do run off standard diesel though ours is tapped in to the main diesel tank of the van. They then need electricity (DC generally) to get the glow plugs going and then they happily pump out a ton of heat whilst using about 1amp DC and a tiny bit of diesel.

I love ours loads and they are around £100 for a full kit though I cannot see how this could work for the average camper in a tent. If you had a marquee and wanted to heat it then you could rig up a system with a leisure battery and a tank of diesel but I think it wouldn't go down well in a standard campsite as they are smelly when they start up (and a bit noisy) though they do settle down. The exhaust pipe (yes they have a little exhaust pipe like a car!) gets super hot as well so kids running around etc... Don't see it working but well done for bringing it up!

I've used the above heater in tents and in a broken caravan.

They will take the chill off certainly and I would recommend it for that.

The canisters can be bought in bulk from Amazon cheaply and can also be used in the small stove that I use to cook fish outside.

I wouldn't sleep with it going for obvious reasons but to warm a tent in the evening it is great as long as care is taken.

In care being taken do you mean trying not to nod off? The consequences of doing so would probably be fatal in a caravan.
