I just use a 5 litre bottled water (£1.30) container which goes in recycling at the end of the holiday. You have to refill more often but at least the water is fresh from the tap.
We use a stainless steel 4l lidded container. Easy enough to pour from. Wide neck so easy to clean properly. If you're on a campsite you're usually not that far from a tap.
Another vote for the 5 litre water bottle, far better than the several proper water containers that I have bought over the years. As the previous poster said, you can pick them up full from most supermarkets for about £1 and refill them on site.
I use a couple of those 5L collapsible water containers for my pop up kitchen event, and was lucky to find ones that do not leak, as my previous experience with such containers was not good when I was a tenter.
In the end, I ditched the one I used for camping and kept filling up the 1.7L kettle instead, which was fine as I camped on my own with the dog.

Outwell Collaps water carrier. No taint. Packs small. Saves plastic waste on 5l bottles.
I thought this could be a winner but it does not look like you can use it to transport water in the car as the top lid does not look water tight to me?
An other vote for the 5l bottled water, reuse and and recycle.
I have a 5l collapsible container of unknown brand which is a cube shape when full. The container is quite strong but is unstable on a table and the tap has broken so can't recommend
As a solo camper I don't need large quantities of water so I've acquired a couple of 1l food safe soft plastic bottles to use on sites.
I also have a couple of metal drink bottles of different sizes for portable potable water when out walking.

I have one of these (or very similar). I think it is fab. Really easy to clean, no taste to it, and holds water easy while travelling. The only thing is that you have to loosen the lid when stationary to get a good flow of water.
Easy to store and has a tap on the bottom and the whole thing sits nicely on a flat surface like a table. Fast water flow? Thinking about it not terribly but certainly fast enough for filling kettles and pans.
After extensive research (!) I`ve just ordered a 10 litre Ridge Monkey water container. They do them in 5, 10 & 15 litre. Look decent and heavy duty. I`ll post a review once I`ve been camping with it
