After some time without a van, I recently obtained a 1996 Eldiss Hurricane GT 2 berth, I cannot get either the gas fire orfridge to work/ignite on gas, the cooker works O.K but nothing happens when I push the ignition button so I light it with a match, all gas cocks are turned on, is there a battery required to excite these things, the cooker is a Vanette?

Yes, you need a fully charged leisure connected up which is the source of the spark and I say fully charged due to the fact that a good spark is required to ignite the pilot light. If a weak spark is evident you will get an initial build up of gas causing a blow back.

Some cookers have a Piezo ignitor which doesn't require a leisure battery.

If it’s like above they don’t always work that well. I gave up on ours and use a normal refillable kitchen gas lighter.

With caravan of that era both should work ok without leisure battery installed if they are in good condition which yours may not be. For your fridge you should clean burner & flue. There is a spiral that pulls out of flue & burner should be cleaned with toothbrush. Then if piezo igniter is working ok it should work. Same with gas fire. It needs cleaning & servicing. It will have either a piezo igniter or possibly battery igniter requires an AA battery usually.

Best advice is get a caravan engineer out and give them a proper service.
It's gas, get it sorted properly!

My advice with buying a second hand MH is to get a Habitation Service done by an appropriate engineer. Ours found that the fire’s gas flue was blocked by a bird nest. In those days (20 years ago) MHs weren’t fitted with CO alarms (but we put one up after that). He found other stuff, some of which we just lived with & others we sorted ourselves.
