Hi all,

Due to go on our first camping trip and after spending a small fortune gathering bits I think may or may not be useful. Today I purchased the calor gas bottle as fuel for the camping stove we purchased from Aldi about 2 years ago! So I hooked up the regulator and got the stove fired up all working fine I’m just curious as to what the hot plate thing is in between the 2 hobs. The metal rack that holds the pans has a sticky out bit so nothing will sit on it flat. I thought it might be to toast bread but within seconds it cremated a piece so I’m guessing that’s not it’s purpose!! Maybe it’s to toast marshmallows dangled over it as it gets quite hot?

Any help much appreciated and apologies if this is a bit of a dumb question but 🫣😁

I has to be the deflector plate for the grill which if you look under the plate you will see the grill burner which is connected to the control knob at the front. If there was no deflector plate the flames would just rise up through the top instead of being deflected onto the grill pan. That's the obvious reason why it's gets really hot.

Did my above post answer your question as it doesn't look like anyone else has any other possible theory as to what the central hot plate could be?

This is weird, as I am sure I had posted in this thread and so did another UKCSer and said the same thing - it is a deflector plate for the grill underneath.

Sorry for the late reply but we were thrust into our first camping trip and I’ve just realised I never replied! Thanks for your replies and yes I think it must simply be a deflector, that makes sense. I was just worried I was missing out on an extra function lol like I said, complete beginner here but our first taste of camping action was thoroughly enjoyed by all so safe to say we’ll be doing it again and hopefully next time a 3 hour full on downpour won’t occur as the tent did leak in slightly 🫣😱 I feel we experienced everything that is camping though so prepares us well for next time lol

Thanks again for your quick responses and help 🤩👍

It’s the very same model as one sold under the Campingaz brand. An evolution of a design that’s been around for many years but unfortunately seems to be gradually getting worse, I guess as the accountants increasingly influence the design! No doubt you’ve discovered that it doesn’t make for a particularly good grill, however if you’re after toast then I can recommend the hob-mounted ones which whilst they take a bit of care not to burn the bread the sipped at which they work mean you get a crispy outside and soft inside - better than my toast at home!

I think the traditional way to do toast is UNDER the grill, not on top of it.
