Hi! I've been looking for a portable electric hob for the home in addition for camping. I've had trouble finding a version that could accomodate a large pan (about 12 inches) as the plastic controls get in the way. Can anyone suggest?
Hiya. If your pan is compatible, how about an induction hob? They tend to have flat controls, and be just about big enough. The Tefal version draws 2.1kw at full power - just under 10A - so ok on most camp sites. It’s obviously less if turned down a bit. We’ve not tripped yet, even on a 6A supply.
If the pan is larger than the induction hob burner it can take longer to heat up, ideally the pan should just cover the burner for maximum efficiently.

I would definitely recommend an induction hob.
I bought a Kampa conventional electric hob and the casing gets almost as hot as the hob itself, very dangerous when camping.
I would also recommend induction - Lidl were selling some for £30 a couple of weeks ago but suspect they have all sold out. Depending on what you want it for a "multi-cooker"" is a possible alternative
We tried an electric dual hob to protect the tent from flames. Trying to boil a kettle was like watching paint dry. The induction hob, is so fast, our electric kettle is slower.

My friends reckon I should be certified anyway. And they should know!!
If I were to buy a stand-alone induction hob, I would consider the single or the double one by Vango as they can be used outdoors.

The OP was asking for a hob that would accommodate a 12" pan, all the ones mentioned are a lot smaller than that.

In theory, it would still work due to heat transfer within the metal from the zone that is in contact with the induction surface. Just need to be very efficient and careful in stirring the content during cooking.

As you say it may work but it can lead to hotspot burning if you don't keep stirring it.
Ideally the pan should be the same size as the burner.
Ideally yes, however, the OP may not wish to invest in another pan!
I suspect the OP's 12in pan may not be induction ready, however, I could be wrong though.
The biggest pan I can use on my light catering ones is 24cm, and the Thetford one in my van is only 22cm.

I'm going to try the Foreman small griddle this year, its less than 800W and should be able to do sausages / burgers / chicken fillets / salmon for two, leaving the gas just for heating veg or pasta. Worth a try.

Our Tefal Everyday induction hob states for pans up to 25cm but I regularly use a 28cm frying pan on it and found no problems.
Same with my light catering ones in that I used 28cm pans on them without any reported issues.
