I wouldn't have thought there was enough power from a USB socket to provide much in the way of heat, and if there was I would expect it to drain a battery quite quickly. Unless of course the USB outlet was from a mains socket, but then what would be the point?
Three factors to take into account:
1) The USB standard to which the equipment is manufactured (latest standards have far higher power delivery potential).
2) The power rating of the equipment.
3) The power output limits of the power source. (NOT necessarily supplied with the cushion!)
The current most common cables and power sources are only rated at 5V/1.5A, which gives a rather pathetic 7.5W power rating, I doubt you'd notice the difference between a heated cushion and an ordinary cushion!
You've got to take into account the historic origins of USB, it was a data connection, not a power delivery system! There was a modest power delivery capacity to power up things like distribution hubs etc., but it was never intended to be a HD power delivery system! It sort of got hijacked into being used as a charging cable for low powered rechargeable devices like mobile phones etc., but 5V/1.5A was adequate for that.
Latest USB standards have upped power delivery to a Max of 48V/5A, giving 240W, but don't think I've ever seen one in real life!
The USB heated cushion adverts I took a quick look at, claimed (rather too much to be creditable IMHO!) impressive heating temps, but avoided stating what the power consumption was! - Draw your own conclusions!!!!
ALL heating devices require substantial power, and the common USB cables and power sources generally cannot meet that demand!
If it doesn't come with it's own cable, you also risk over heating (melting) the plugs and/or cable itself if connected to any source that has greater power delivery than the cable is rated at!
Unless it's a complete package of high powered power source and cable as well as the cushion, I would anticipate being very disappointed with it powered from common USB devices in your possession or available in the general marketplace.
hi all, i use heated gloves on my motorcycle in the winter, they have small batteries in a pocket on the cuff, they plug into a USB2 to 3 pin plug adaptor. they last about 4 hours on high setting , theres 3 heat settings.
i assumed a USB2 is 2 amp and a USB1 is 1amp,
look on the charger--- thats if they are battery , that will give the output
gloves are quite good in the cold, i'd sooner have them than not
stu
Just bought a hand warmer that charges via usb. Need to be careful if it is on highest setting as it gets very hot. On lowest setting (just warm) it should run approx 11 hours. Not really tested it in full yet, but Young Auntie has been very pleased with the one I gave her a couple of years ago.
