We had one in the van in the South of France, and it was just okay. Then when it got to over 40deg it really struggled.
We then decided enough is enough and when we came home got a roof mounted AC unit fitted, now you're talking.

Taking into consideration the heat in Spain they may drop the inside temperature slightly down on the ambient temperature i.e. outside is 30C and inside it is 26C. We have a proper air con and were very grateful for it when we last Spain and temperature was hovering around 28C and we are used to high temperatures having lived in the tropics for over 40 years.

I don't like the heat and people laughed when I installed air con in my house in 2006, saying it was OTT for air conditioning in UK etc. etc...

Not laughing when we had hot weather over 30degC in the past few years, may be just a little!

When I was working away from home in 2019 and stayed mostly at a hotel without air conditioning, I bought one of those small personal evaporation cooler and used it in addition to a fan.

Although it made a slight difference in temperature, as the water tank was not very big, I had to keep refilling it which was not practical through the night!

If I were to work away from home from June to August again, I shall definitely pay more and opt for a room with air conditioning.

Therefore, I cannot recommend an evaporation cooler for a van.

One of my must-have design specification for my PVC was an roof-mounted air conditioning unit, which was much appreciated when I was camping in August 2022 during the heat wave!

Bite the bullet and get a roof-mounted air con unit I'd say.

Personal experience/opinion etc. etc...

After the very hot spell in the south of France a few years ago I started looking at air con. I was jammy enough to buy a little used second-hand roof top one from Dometic on Preloved for just £150 including remote control. Believe it or not, the guy was going to just sling it as it wasn't big enouigh to cope with his new larger motorhome. That is my best bargain ever.

Evaporative air coolers use water to reduce the ambient temperature so also raise the humidity levels which is not ideal.

Dave.
