hi all,
i'm not that much technically minded, but i do watch satelite tv whilst away, through my sky dish and sky box.
but i recently tried to watch the snooker at home on my sky set up at home ,and the message came up they had switched to HD only and my old SD equipment will not now work, so i assume my box and set-up in the van will also not work. i dont subscribe to sky ,just use the free channels.
so , do i just need a sky HD box to view the HD channels, or do i need a HD tv as well.
HD boxes on ebay can be had for around 25 quid, but will they work on my small 45cm caravan dish and non HD tv
thanks for any info

I would suggest buying the Freesat HD box. We dumped Sky last year. You can stream Sky channels using NOW TV and it can be a monthly contract.

I think for the Entertainment and Cinema channels it is about £10 a month for a minimum contract of 6 months. If only Entertainment it is about £4 a month for 6 months or for Cinema £4.99 for the 6 month minimum contract.

We now only subscribe to Now TV (Sky) as and when we want to watch something and then only for about 2 months. You can then catch up on all the channels you missed.

The Now TV entertainment channel is £6.99 per month on a 6 month subscription or £9.99 for the fully flexible subscription on a monthly basis. The entertainment and film subscription is £13.99 for 6 months.

thank iank01 , but that wouldnt be an option for us, budget wouldnt run to subscriptions , together with paying a tv licence, and its only the BBC channels that are missing, i begrudge sending money to Rupert Murdock.
i assume the NOW TV , you have to be on wi-fi,

Then a Freesat HD box would be best for you as you need a subscription to watch BBC HD on a SkyHD box. However if you have Internet at home you can stream BBC channels using the BBC iPlayer app.

thanks iank01, i've done a bit of research and so yes, it looks like a freesat HD box is the way to go any recommendations as to which box to get,
things for me to bear in mind is, i find it really easy to set up the sky dish, due to the on screen display showing which satellite im logged on to and the signal strength, do other boxes have the easy graphics as well.
also i put the box under the front seat and use a "sky remote eye" to control the box, which plugs into the aerial co-ax socket, i suppose this will now be defunked, do any other boxes have a simillar feature, or are small enough to fit on the front windowsill, possibly only about 6 inches?
thanks for any coments
p.s. i'm probably looking for a cheap new one ,or a used one , theres loads of them on e-bay etc

We used to have the Sky+HD under our front bunk and used the magic eye. However as the Freesat box is so small in comparison, we now have it under the TV which is on the front chest of drawers.

I think there is only the one brand now which is the Freesat one and it is relatively easy to set up.

I have a Humax Freesat box at home but Humax don't make them any more, I had a Manhatten freesat box for the van, it doesn't record but it only cost £69.

thank you both for taking the time to reply, i thought they were all Freesat eboxes, did'nt realise, that Freesat was a brand name , i've just been down to Currys, they dont have any on display, just the sealed boxes, alarmed up, but the Freesat and a Manhatten one look quite small, which is just what i need to go on the front sill.
ill probably look on ebay and get a cheap one ,to see how the display is for setting the dish up.
thanks again

There is one other option that cost £15 per month and no contract. It is with Sky and you can watch and record all the Freesat HD channels.

We only have Freesat at home. Being in the sticks the Freeview is hopeless. I think BBC closed the SD channels and are now only HD for news etc. Not sure about other channels.

This seems abit amazing to me. Sorry I seem abit simple but we bought a 21 inch tele with built in free view, 20 quid and built in dvd player 8 years ago. We've been through sky box and sat dishes etc. Forget it. Go down a car boot and a tele with free view.

freeview is hopeless on site, through the caravan aerial, we are talking about freesat, through a dish, which works brilliant every time provided you have a clear line of sight to the satellite
