Hi ghez check your Vehical manufacturers maximum roof weight limit ! ,this limit applies to the weight of box and contents +the roof bars ! so first time its a good idea to weigh everything in ,then keep a note of what to put in there !
We use straps that are recommended for roofboxes but they arnt ratchet type one because we felt they would scratch the roofbox ,we got ours from Wilkinsons for a couple of quid ,we use them just to be on the safe side !

I've just got a roofbox and bars from
http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/directory2/details.asp?revid=572&typeid=
Ordered them on monday night and they were delivered on Wednesday.
Not actually fitted it yet but the website and staff I spoke to seemed knowledgeable. The deciding factor for me was that it came straight to the house and I didn't have to try and fit it in halfords carpark.

Me too. Used recommendation from this site...and wow'd with customer service. They may also have a sale or clearance, so do check them out first.

Can I ask a stupid question here about roof bars?
I have a Volvo 850 1992 reg estate which has nothing on the roof! The flat strips that run on the edge of the roof which have two 6" strips that come out are, I assume, where I fit the "feet" (looked at the thule roofbars), and then the bars go across the roof. Is this all I need then? My OH seems to think that roofbars are going to cost about £400.00 plus the box. Tell me he's wrong, please!
I suppose I had better to go to a proper shop that can advise me, but I like to have a bit of knowledge before I go and see these people.

Is where we got ours from, it came within a couple of days and is huge! We've used just the once, but it was great not having the kids squashed in the back with all the sleeping bags and 'extras'. We used 3 straps on it, just to be ultra secure, we didn't fancy all our stuff spread all over the A19!!
