the mantle is supposed to burn the first time you light it, do you mean it has a hole in it after it burns

The new mantle should be "burnt off" before the lamp is used. Usually by lighting it without the gas on. When it has burnt it turns white & becomes very brittle so should not be touched. If it gets holed through being knocked then you need a new mantle again.------------- Caz
If you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel, just keep going till you go round the bend.

Hello Hedze
As Caz said, you might try fireing the mantle before you turn the gas on. Until it has been hardened by temperature, the gas pressure will be blowing it to bits.

I seem to have toreplace the mantles everytime I go camping, as the things don't seem to transport that well, and have been broken by the next time I get it out to use.------------- Gray

Ah, you can't be packing them carefully enough, Gray. Or you are driving too erratically so they break in transit!
My Paraffin lamp travels upright in the fire bucket, the gas one is upright in a cupboard in the camper. They don't often break.
