I have a gas lantern & have damaged the mantle. Every time I try to replace it the new mantle catches fire & burns up within a few seconds the first time I light the lantern. What am I doing wrong?

the mantle is supposed to burn the first time you light it, do you mean it has a hole in it after it burns

The new mantle should be "burnt off" before the lamp is used. Usually by lighting it without the gas on. When it has burnt it turns white & becomes very brittle so should not be touched. If it gets holed through being knocked then you need a new mantle again.

I mean flames come out of the lantern & the mantle burns up & falls to pieces

If the mantles you are using are a bit ancient, you could think about new ones.  I did mine tonight with a brand new mantle with no probs.

Hello Hedze

As Caz said, you might try fireing the mantle before you turn the gas on.  Until it has been hardened by temperature, the gas pressure will be blowing it to bits.

DONT LIGHT THE MANTLE USING THE GAS, SET FIRE TOO THE MANTAL INPLACE TILL IT BURNS OUT, THEN YOU CAN USE IT WITH GAS OR PETROL.

I seem to have toreplace the mantles everytime I go camping, as the things don't seem to transport that well, and have been broken by the next time I get it out to use.

Ah, you can't be packing them carefully enough, Gray. Or you are driving too erratically so they break in transit!

My Paraffin lamp travels upright in the fire bucket, the gas one is upright in a cupboard in the camper. They don't often break.
