Just how comfortable are the inflating matresses? I have been toying with buying a Thermarest Dreamtime which is 8cm thick, will you still be able to feel the ground underneath?
Don't want to pay all that money out and find that it's not comfortable enough. Should I stick with the airbed?
Hi, I know Thermarest are supposed to be the best you can get (from what I've read on here) and I know people swear by them. I've tried the ones from Lidl and just can't get on with them. I had two joined together for extra thickness, which I think was around 8cm, and could feel the floor through them. Airbeds for me!
I bought a Thermarest and already had a stormlight 3/4 size which I put undeneath for extra padding. I still wasn't totally comfy so have bought a proper camping bed and will use the thermarest as a mattress on top. Now I am all set up and hope to sleep very well!!
I have a "basecamp" Thermarest which is 5cm thick when fully inflated. I always add a couple of full breaths to firm it up nicely. I am a 6ft, 16 stone (but handsomely formed) bloke and find the Thermarest really comfortable and cannot feel the ground through it. Expensive but worth every penny in my view!

I was sceptical about self-inflating mattresses at first, but having now tried them out and compared it to an inflatable mattress I think that they are the best for us, especially as we do not want to cart around extra bedding.
It is a firm base, but you cannot feel 'bumps' as such and more importantly they insulate you well from the ground so you do not wake up cold. Inflateable mattresses seem to take the warmth away from you so you need to put some thermal layer(s) between you and the top of the mattress. There are a couple of threads about that on here somewhere I think.
Our mattresses were from CCCOutdoors, Robens 5cm thick (and wider than usual), so cheaper than Thermarest, and we are pretty pleased with them.

We also pondered this one and went for Vango mats, seemed the same but were cheaper than Thermarest. Much comfier and quicker to sort out, rather than airbeds that go flop in the night ....

I've had a 3cm thick one for years.It's much better than a mat. great for back packing, but less compfy than an airbed.A thicker one would be as good but no better
