The cable on the Combicool doesn't quite reach the cigarette lighter in the van so I bought a 12V extension for it. By the time we had loaded everything else in to the van the extension had shorted and melted and was useless. Does anyone else run an extension succesfully or are we going to have to lengthen the actual cable on the fridge?

cable cross section max length
2.5mm2 2.5m
4.0mm2 4.0m
6.0mm2 6.0m
so the longer the cable the thicker the lead needs to be,i suspect to counter the increased resistance

Most 12V car extension cables are not designed to take the load that a fridge will put on it. You'd be better making a cable up using some 6A 2-core mains flex, if you can use a soldering iron.

Jenny, this may sound a daft question, but do you need to have the fridge plugged into the van at all?
I had our fridge turned on at home for a good 24 hours before departure, then crammed it full of all the cold food, including some frozen sausages, and a couple of ice blocks. Because the lid wasn't opened it kept in the cold perfectly well until we arrived at our destination and got it set up to the gas bottle.

I have to say that I used my combicool for the first time earlier this year and like Tessa suggests turned it on the night before I needed it to get it cool.
I set it at the coldest setting, put my cold stuff in the next day as well as some frozen stuff and the frozen stuff stayed frozen for almost the whole week!!! ((in fact some of the stuff that wasn't meant to freeze did!!) I did not have the fridge plugged in for a few hours while travelling and I gradually reduced the temperature setting on the fridge each day to try and get the right coolness.

Yes that's fine when going on short trips in this country but I want to get it sorted for travelling in Europe next summer. Will have to lengthen cable I guess.

Just a thought, and I'm far from being knowledgeable on this but ....
Would you be able to run the Combicool on a spare battery in the back of the van. I'm sure I've heard people talk of 'Leisure' batteries or something like that. Would one of them work ??????

You could run a wire direct from the vehicle battery and fit a new/additional socket in the boot. Some cars come with these already fitted. OH fitted one in our caravan, got it from Maplin. All you need is a suitable place to mount it.

We had a split charger fitted in the boot. This way you can power a combicool or charge a leisure battery while the engine is running.
