Hi we're fairly new to camping and would like some advice on electic hook up .I've bought a 'proper' cable from a friend at work who used to camp. The thing is I don't understand what I can run on it (dddddeeeerrrrrrr)What I mean is .Do I have to buy special low voltage appliances to use with it or can I just use 'normal' household appliances. We were thinking of buying a combi tv and some sort of heater.I was going to buy a camping gaz heater as well .Any advice will be greatly appreciated
PS My hubby has never camped before and I don't want him to be put off As I really enjoy it .Hence the heater and TV .LOL
A lot will depend on the site's power - this can vary quite a bit. Once you know the site's amperage you can run any combination of things up to this. TV/video should be ok all sites. If necessary you can always switch one thing off whilst you use another.
Welcome to the site, make sure the hook up has a circit breaker on it, then I use mine for a normal tv/dvd and combicool fridge, Ive got a halogen heater and a light things that heat up tend to use more amps so dont have heavy users on all at once ( electric kettles/ microwaves / heaters ) hope this helps but somebody with more tecnical advice will be along soon
Thanks for taking the time to answer me I can now buy my telly with peace of mind and having read some of the other threads I'm considering the oil heater .
the oil heater is heav to carry around and takes a long time to feel the benefit a fan heater with a thermostat woud be a better choice, as when we get another heat wave you can just use the fan on cold to cool down aswell you should be ok with one thats 2 kw on most sites otherwise just run it on 1kw
The first thing you have to find out is how many amps the EHU supply is. Some are 16 amps, some less - 10 or even 5. If its 16 amps you can run applicances with a total wattage of 3680. If its 10 amps, the max wattage is 2300, and if its 5 amps you can run only 1150 watts. Just add up the wattage of the things you are using at the same time to make sure you're within the limit. Some things actually take a power surge when you first switch on which takes them above their running wattage, so try not to run too close to the limit and you'll be OK!
HI Jelica you can get a low wattage oil heater mine is about 400w it is not long worming up it also has a variable heat setting it was from b&q you can also get low power fan heaters
