can you kind and techno minded souls please explain 1) very basically how a gas fridge works, 2) what type of cannisters they can run off & 3) are they good pices of kit.
cheers
------------- apologies in advance as i know nothing about this outdoor lark
I have a Combicool, and it`s the best piece of kit I own, after the tent.
Mine runs off Campingaz if I don`t have electricity on the pitch. I don`t know if they can run off Calor, but someone else will.
We`re a family of four and the Combicool is large enough for all the food and some of the beer. We just came back from a trip to France, and Hubby said the fridge probably paid for itself over that one holiday. He likes his beer cold and if you don`t have a decent fridge well, then you have to use the campsite bar. Trouble with that is that a beer in the bar costs 2€, and a pack of 30 beers (same brand and size) from the supermarket costs 8€. Hubby likes his beer, and we were in France for five weeks...work the maths out.
They run off the butane or propane, so all you need is the correct regulator for the cylinder.
Mine went almost through a 907 cyclinder over a three week holiday, although I did leave it on permanently. I know some people switch them off overnight as the air is cool outside, so that would probably make the cylinder last longer.
Shop around though...I`ve heard folk say here they paid £129 for theirs. Mind you, Wilddays have low postage....£3.95 per order last time I bought from them.
If using this combicool in the uk with calor gas etc, what is the smallest gas cannister & rough cost I can use (that will likely last 3-4 days constantly on).
I realise this will not be a cost effective way of getting gas but I can put up with it.
thanks

Well the smallest calor bottle you can get is a 4.5 ,and have used our for about 4 weeks now and still pretty full ,You can use it with campinggaz too ,and a 907 bottle last for around 10 days !
You can get a 4.5kg Calor cylinder which I think is the smallest they do (check out calor.co.uk). Be aware though that you need a different regulator for this cylinder than the 7.5kg one.
I haven't managed to work out how much gas ours uses as we have used a variety of half used cylinders. it seems to be very economical - we have a small Camping gaz cylinder and I'm amazed how long it has lasted. I think the suggestion on here previously was that a small camping gaz cylinder will last 10 days to 2 weeks.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
